Background: While Gangba sheep being well known for their unique flavour and nutritional value, harsh environmental factors negatively affect their growth and development, leading to poor productivity. The gastrointestinal tract microbiota plays an important role in host nutrient absorption and metabolism. The identification of dynamic changes in the gastrointestinal microbial communities and their functions is an important step towards improving animal production performance and health.

Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis is the standard of care for patients with severe ulcerative colitis. We generated a cell-type-resolved transcriptional and epigenetic atlas of ileal pouches using scRNA-seq and scATAC-seq data from paired biopsy samples of the ileal pouch and the ileal segment above the pouch (pre-pouch) from patients (male=4, female=2), and paired biopsies of the terminal ileum and ascending colon from healthy individuals (male=3, female=3) serving as reference. Our study finds an additional population of absorptive and secretory epithelial cells within the pouch but not the pre-pouch.

The escalating cases of type II diabetes combined with adverse side effects of current antidiabetic drugs spurred the advancement of innovative approaches for the management of postprandial glucose levels. α-Amylase is an endoamylase responsible for the breakdown of internal α-1,4-glycosidic linkages in dietary starch, producing oligosaccharides. Subsequently, α-glucosidase degraded these oligosaccharides to monosaccharides, which are absorbed into the bloodstream and become available to the body.

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, two types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), often cause anemia, primarily due to iron deficiency and chronic inflammation. Anemia negatively affects patients' daily functioning and quality of life, causing symptoms including headaches, exhaustion, and dyspnea. In IBD, iron deficiency arises from reduced intake, chronic blood loss, and impaired absorption.

The knowledge about the occurrence and biochemical characteristics of key digestive enzymes is crucial for an enhanced understanding of the dietary ecophysiology of the species. On the other hand, integrative studies on digestive physiology and on tissue content of glycogen, glucose, lipid and protein in groups of ecological and economic importance are currently limited. In this work, we determined the occurrence and biochemical characteristics in intestine of key digestive enzymes activities as indexes of the ability to digest different dietary substrates and of functional differentiation for digestion/absorption of nutrients along with the intestinal coefficient as index of dietary habit and digestion efficiency in adults of Odonthtestes argentinensis inhabiting Mar Chiquita Coastal Lagoon (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
