A review of natural materials that exhibit negative permittivity or permeability, including gaseous plasma, metals, superconductors, and ferromagnetic materials, is presented. It is shown that samples made of such materials can store large amount of the electric (magnetic) energy and create plasmonic resonators for certain values of permittivity, permeability, and dimensions. The electric and the magnetic plasmon resonances in spherical samples made of such materials are analyzed using rigorous electrodynamic methods, and the results of the analysis are compared to experimental data and to results obtained with other methods.

Efficient musculoskeletal simulators and powerful learning algorithms provide computational tools to tackle the grand challenge of understanding biological motor control. Our winning solution for the inaugural NeurIPS MyoChallenge leverages an approach mirroring human skill learning. Using a novel curriculum learning approach, we trained a recurrent neural network to control a realistic model of the human hand with 39 muscles to rotate two Baoding balls in the palm of the hand.

Background: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the largest nationally integrated health system in the United States, is transitioning from its homegrown electronic health record (EHR) to a new vendor-based EHR, Oracle Cerner. Experiences of the first VA site to transition have been widely discussed in the media, but in-depth accounts based on rigorous research are lacking.
Objective: We sought to explore employee perspectives on the rationale for, and value of, transitioning from a VA-tailored EHR to a vendor-based product.

The alpha complex is a fundamental data structure from computational geometry, which encodes the topological type of a union of balls for , including a weighted version that allows for varying radii. It consists of the collection of "simplices" , which correspond to nonempty -fold intersections of cells in a radius-restricted version of the Voronoi diagram . Existing algorithms for computing the alpha complex require that the points reside in low dimension because they begin by computing the entire Delaunay complex, which rapidly becomes intractable, even when the alpha complex is of a reasonable size.
