Irradiation of condensed matter with ionizing radiation generally causes direct photoionization as well as secondary processes that often dominate the ionization dynamics. Here, large helium (He) nanodroplets with radius ≳ 40 nm doped with lithium (Li) atoms are irradiated with extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons of energy hν ≥ 44.4 eV and indirect ionization of the Li dopants is observed in addition to direct photoionization of the He droplets.

The DNA N6-methyladenine (6mA) is an epigenetic modification, which plays a pivotal role in biological processes encompassing gene expression, DNA replication, repair, and recombination. Solar-to-electrochemical energy storage in solar batteries is an important solar utilization technology comparable to solar-to-electricity (solar cells) and solar-to-fuel (photocatalytic cells) conversion. Unlike the indirect approach of integrated solar flow batteries combining photoelectrodes with redox-electrodes, coupled solar batteries enable direct solar energy storage, but are hampered by low efficiency due to rapid charge recombination of materials and misaligned energy levels between electrodes. Herein, we propose a design for a coupled solar battery that intercouples two photo-coupled ion transfer (PCIT) reactions through electron-ion transfer upon co-photo-pumping of photoelectrochemical storage cathode and anode.
