Chirality, a basic property of symmetry breaking, is crucial for fields such as biology and physics. Recent advances in the study of chiral systems have stimulated interest in the discovery of symmetry-breaking states that enable exotic phenomena such as spontaneous gyrotropic order and superconductivity. Here we examine the interaction between light chirality and electron spins in indium selenide and study the effect of magnetic field on emerging tunnelling photocurrents at the Van Hove singularity.

Isolated Dipolar ONN Schiff Base Regioisomers: Synthesis, Characterization and Crystallographic Study.

Molecules

December 2024

Laboratorio de Química Inorgánica y Organometálica, Departamento de Química Analítica e Inorgánica, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, Universidad de Concepción, Edmundo Larenas 129, Casilla 160-C, Concepción 4070386, Chile.

Organic compounds with 1,3-diketone or 3-amino enone functional groups are extremely important as they can be converted into a plethora of carbo- or heterocyclic derivatives or can be used as ligands in the formation of metal complexes. Here, we have achieved the preparation of a series of non-symmetrical β-ketoenamines (O,N,N proligand) of the type (4-MeOCH)C(=O)CH=C(R)NH(Q) obtained through the Schiff base condensation of 1,3-diketones (1-anisoylacetone, 1-anisyl-3-(4-cyanophenyl)-1,3-propanedione, and 1-anisyl-3-(4,4,4-trifluorotolyl)-1,3-propanedione) functionalized with electron donor and electron-withdrawing substituents and 8-aminoquinoline (R = CH, 4-CHCN, 4-CHCF; Q = CHN). Schiff base ketoimines with a pendant quinolyl moiety were isolated as single regioisomers in yields of 22-56% and characterized with FT-IR, H NMR, and UV-visible spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray crystallography, which allowed for the elucidation of the nature of the isolated regioisomers.

Assembly of Structurally Simple Icosahedral Viruses.

Subcell Biochem

December 2024

Centro de Biología Molecular "Severo Ochoa" (CSIC-UAM) and Department of Molecular Biology, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Madrid, Spain.

Icosahedral viruses exhibit elegant pathways of capsid assembly and maturation regulated by symmetry principles. Assembly is a dynamic process driven by consecutive and genetically programmed morphogenetic interactions between protein subunits. The non-symmetric capsid subunits are gathered by non-covalent contacts and interactions in assembly intermediates, which serve as blocks to build a symmetric capsid.

Unraveling the small tie problem mystery: Size effects from finger counting to mental strategies in addition.

J Exp Child Psychol

December 2024

Institute of Psychology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (SSP), University of Lausanne, CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Determining how children solve arithmetic problems when they stop using their fingers is a real challenge. To take it up, the evolution of problem-size effects for tie and non-tie problems was observed when 6-year-olds (N = 65) shift from finger counting to mental strategies. These observations revealed that the problem-size effect remained the same for non-tie problems, whereas it drastically decreased for tie problems.

Non-symmetric cysteine stapling in native peptides and proteins.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

Research School of Chemistry, College of Science, Australian National University, Canberra 2601 ACT, Australia.

Stapling rigidifies peptides through covalent linkages between amino acids. We introduce 2-chloromethyl-6-cyanopyridine for non-symmetric stapling of N-terminal and internal cysteines. This biocompatible method produces diverse peptide macrocycles with enhanced affinity, stability and inhibitory potency.
