Article Synopsis
  • Ammonia is seen as a promising hydrogen carrier due to its efficiency, easier storage, and established infrastructure, allowing for on-demand hydrogen generation via electrochemical ammonia oxidation.
  • The study investigates bimetallic PtRh alloy catalysts, which show improved performance in the ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) compared to standard platinum catalysts, indicating lower energy requirements and better activity.
  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the Rh component modifies the electronic properties of Pt, reducing issues with catalyst poisoning, thereby enhancing the understanding of AOR mechanisms for future catalyst design.

With the applications of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrical - measurement, and ambient pressure hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-HAXPES), the characteristics of the topotactic phase transition of LaCoO (LCO) thin films are examined. XRD measurements show clear evidence of structural phase transition (SPT) of the LCO thin films from the perovskite (PV) LaCoO to the brownmillerite (BM) LaCoO phases through the intermediate LaCoO phase at a temperature of 350 °C under high-vacuum conditions, ∼10 mbar. The reverse SPT from BM to PV phases is also found under ambient pressure (>100 mbar) of air near 100 °C.

TiZrMoC coatings were deposited on Si(100) substrates using a DC dual magnetron sputtering. The composition was controlled by adjusting the sputtering parameters of the TiZrMo and graphite targets. The influence of graphite target current on the resulting coating properties was explored.

This article studies the synthesis, as well as the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of Eu-doped ZnO quantum dots (QDs) and investigates the energy transfer mechanism from the ZnO host to Eu ions using Reisfeld's approximation. Eu-doped ZnO QDs at varying concentrations (0-7%) were successfully prepared using a wet chemical method. The successful doping of Eu ions into the ZnO host lattice, as well as the composition and valence states of the elements present in the sample, were confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses.

Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045, United States.

ConspectusThe surface of a catalyst is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of catalytic reactions at the molecular level and developing new catalysts with higher activity, selectivity, and durability. Ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) is a technique studying the surface of a sample in the gas phase, mainly identifying chemical identity, analyzing oxidation state, and measuring surface composition. In the last decade, numerous photoelectron spectroscopic methods for fundamental studies of key topics in catalysis using AP-XPS have been developed.
