The effects of different conditions of occupational exposure to organic solvents on subjective sleep quality were studied with and without shiftwork. Laboratory studies showed that four hours of daytime exposure to ethanol (400, 800 ppm) by inhalation led to blood ethanol levels below 0.01 per thousand and had marginal effects on the following night's sleep. Exposures to acetone (1,000 ppm), ethyl acetate (400 ppm), and a solvent mixture (acetone 500 ppm, ethyl acetate 200 ppm) increased the subjective depth of sleep. In a field study with eight hours of exposure, during three different work shifts, dose-response relationships between acetone concentrations during the shiftwork and the depth of sleep were found. Nevertheless, the solvent-exposed shift workers reported a reduced sleep quality, mainly in connection with daytime sleep, in comparison with non-exposed shift workers. The effects of solvent exposure during shiftwork on sleep varied with time of day of the exposure.

Background/objectives: A sustained-release formulation of fenofibrate while enhancing drug dissolution with minimal food effect is critical for maximizing the therapeutic benefits of fenofibrate. Therefore, this study aimed to develop an effective solid dispersion formulation of fenofibrate for simultaneous enhancement in the extent and duration of drug exposure.
Methods: Fenofibrate-loaded solid dispersions (FNSDs) were prepared using poloxamer 407 and Eudragit RSPO at varied ratios via solvent evaporation.

Poor breathability, inadequate flexibility, bulky wearability, and insufficient gas-adsorption capacity always limit the developments and applications of conventional chemical protective clothing (CPC). To create a lightweight, breathable, and flexible fabric with a high gas-absorption capacity, activated carbon (AC)-loaded poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) porous composite fibres were fabricated from a mixed wet-spinning process integrated with a solvent-free phase separation process. By manipulating the pore parameters of as-spun composite fibres, the exposure-immobilization of AC particles on the fibre surface can offer a higher gas-absorption capacity and better AC-loading stability.

In the shipbuilding industry, during the painting process, workers are exposed to various substances in paint, including organic solvents that can adversely affect their health. Most workplace exposures to organic solvents involve mixtures of organic compounds. Therefore, in this study, the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were derived using data from the Workplace Environmental Monitoring Program in Korea for six organic solvents (xylene, n-butanol, ethylbenzene, isobutyl alcohol, toluene, and methylisobutyl ketone [MIBK]) commonly used in the steel shipbuilding industry.

The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor is a major target of ethanol, and it is implicated in learning and memory formation, and other cognitive functions. Glycine acts as a co-agonist for this receptor. We examined whether Org24598, a selective inhibitor of glycine transporter1 (GlyT1), affects ethanol withdrawal-induced deficits in recognition memory (Novel Object Recognition (NOR) task) and spatial memory (Barnes Maze (BM) task) in rats, and whether the NMDA receptor glycine site participates in this phenomenon.

In this study, UV-induced ()-to-() geometrical isomerizations of the curcumin degradation product ()-dehydrozingerone, along with curcumin-inspired ()--methylated dehydrozingerone and their corresponding C-symmetric dimers, were investigated. All compounds produced corresponding () isomers in varying yields upon UV irradiation in deuterated solvents. The efficiency of these photoisomerizations depended on the solvent and wavelength used.
