Multifocality increases the risk of central compartment lymph node metastasis but is not related to the risk of recurrence and death in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Gland Surg

December 2024

Department of Thyroid and Neck Oncology, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Tianjin's Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Key Laboratory of Cancer Prevention and Therapy, Tianjin, China.

Background: Multifocality is a distinctive feature of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC); however, the biological behavior of PTC and its optimal management strategy remain unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical features and prognostic differences of multifocal papillary carcinoma and to guide the precise treatment of multifocal papillary carcinoma.

Methods: The medical records of 1,139 patients with PTC who had undergone total or hemi-thyroidectomy between April and October 2013 at the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital were reviewed.

Quantification of the Survival Disadvantage Associated with Major Amputation in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease.

J Clin Med

December 2024

Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, KliniK Ottakring, Montleartstrasse 37, 1160 Vienna, Austria.

: Despite advancements in vascular surgery, the mortality among peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients undergoing major amputations remains high. While a large body of evidence has previously covered survival rates after major amputation, there is less evidence regarding the associated survival penalty from an epidemiological perspective. The present analysis aimed at quantifying the survival disadvantage after major lower limb amputation while investigating which factors are associated with mortality in this patient cohort.

Objective: The concept of proportionate and disproportionate functional mitral regurgitation suggests that transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral repair may benefit patients with a smaller left ventricle relative to a higher regurgitant burden. The clinical relevance of proportionality remains unknown in mitral operations for ischemic mitral regurgitation. We aimed to characterize the association between mitral regurgitation proportionality and outcomes after mitral valve operations.

Background: Dentists can be exposed to dust and nanoparticles from teeth, dental composites, and metal alloys generated during dental procedures, and exposure to dust can cause respiratory diseases, including pulmonary fibrosis. The authors describe mortality from nonmalignant respiratory diseases (NMRDs) among dentists in the United States.

Methods: The authors submitted information on US dentists who died from 1979 through 2018 to a centralized US death records database to obtain underlying causes of death.
