Unlabelled: Caliceal diverticula may be congenital or acquired malformations of the collecting system, normally asymptomatic and discovered during an IVP. Indications for treatment included chronic vague flank pain, acute renal colic, urinary tract infection and hematuria. We present the results of 29 patients with symptomatic calculi in caliceal diverticula who were managed by ESWL monotherapy. All treatments were performed with electrohydraulic machine (Dornier HM 4) in ambulatory form.

Results: The average followup was 42 months. 12 patients (40%) had passed successfully all of the stone fragments, while 2 patients (7%) had passed more than half and 4 (13.5%) had passed less than half of the fragments. 66 per cent of patients had been rendered free of symptoms. The possibility of producing a satisfactory result (66% free of symptoms and 40% stone free by X ray) and the low morbidity of ESWL suggest that this treatment may be appropriate for majority of calculi in calicea diverticula.

Background: There is still controversy about the best minimally invasive surgical method for the treatment of calyceal diverticulum calculi. We conducted meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of PCNL and FURL in the treatment of calyceal diverticulum calculi.

Methods: We searched Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Clinical trial platform, CNKI, VIP until April 2024.

Introduction: There is a dearth of research available on the outcomes, complications, and recurrence rates of the modalities employed in treatment of diverticula after stone clearance by PCNL. We present our experience of various approaches employed in our institute for treatment of caliceal diverticulum after stone clearance by PCNL. We aimed to review the outcomes, complications, and recurrence rates of these procedures which can provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of these techniques in the treatment of stone containing caliceal diverticulum.

Article Synopsis
  • The review highlights the increase in imaging diagnosis leading to the identification of renal anomalies and the evolving treatment options for symptomatic kidney stones, particularly retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS).
  • Despite the growing interest, there is limited evidence and consensus on the effectiveness of RIRS in patients with renal anomalies.
  • The authors emphasize the importance of advancements in treatment techniques, especially with new laser technologies, while calling for more research to determine the best surgical approaches for treating kidney stones in anomalous kidneys.

Purpose Of Review: Caliceal diverticula are relatively uncommon within urologic practice and may be difficult to diagnose and treat. We aim to highlight contemporary studies examining surgical interventions for patients with caliceal diverticula, with a focus on percutaneous intervention, and provide updated practical recommendations for the management of these patients.

Recent Findings: Studies within the last 3 years examining surgical treatment options for caliceal diverticular calculi are limited.

Calyceal diverticula (CD) are relatively uncommon urologic conditions that generally follow an asymptomatic course and rarely require medical intervention. CD are thought to have a congenital origin due to abnormalities during the process of ureteral bud formation. Clinically and radiologically, they can mimic multiple neoplastic and non-neoplastic renal processes, with potentially relevant differences in the management of these patients.
