The Arieş River (Western Romania) represents one of the most important affluents of the Mureş River, with great significance in the Mureş Tisza basin. The environmental quality of the Arieş basin is significantly affected by both historic mining activities and contemporary impacts. Thus, an evaluation of the effects of the main contaminants found in water (organochlorine pesticides-OCPs, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-MAHs, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-PAHs, and metals) on cyanobacteria and plants was performed.

The development of effective measures for the remediation of lindane contaminated sites is the need of the hour. In this study, a potent lindane degrading bacteria, identified as NITDBS9 was isolated from an agricultural field of Odisha that could utilize up to 87% of 100 mg L lindane when grown under liquid culture conditions in mineral salt media in 10 days. The bacteria could produce biofilm in lindane-containing media.

In the present study, chemical analysis of contaminants (three classes of organic pollutants and seven metals) and elutriate toxicity test were adopted to evaluate the potential environmental hazards of dredged sediment samples from five sites (SS1-5) along Huangpu River Channel (Shanghai Harbor, China). The metal Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn and the organic pollutants including total hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs) in the five samples exceeded the threshold for effects level (TEL) to varying degrees. The probable effect concentration quotients (Q) of contaminants from the five dredged samples were all above 0.

Occurrence and risk assessment of persistent organic pollutants in a branch of the Grand Canal in Hangzhou, China.

Environ Monit Assess

March 2018

Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology for Industrial Pollution Control of Zhejiang Province, College of Environment, Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310032, China.

The Grand Canal is one of the most important waterways and sources of drinking water in China. The security of this water environment has a strong influence on national economic development and public health. However, data on the pollution status and potential risks due to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in this area is insufficient.
