This experiment was designed to assess the relative importance of dimensional similarity between test and interpolated problems and absolute difficulty of interpolated material as variables influencing short-term retention in the discrimination learning of retarded persons. Twenty moderate-to-borderline retarded individuals were taught a mixed series of two-trial discriminations consisting of: (a) relatively easy multidimensional ("junk") problems and (b) more difficult, form-relevant dotpattern discriminations. Test problems and interpolations were either dimensionally similar (both junk or both dot-pattern problems) or dissimilar (train one type of problem, interpolate the other). The major finding was that short-term forgetting occurred only when test and interpolated stimuli were dimensionally similar. Absolute difficulty of interpolations had no effect on retention. These results were interpreted as supporting Fisher and Zeaman's (1973) assumption of dimensional independence of memory processes in retarded persons. A secondary finding was that performance on dot-pattern discriminations varied with intelligence.

Background: The degenerative spondylosis can cause the difficulty in maintaining sagittal and coronal alignment of spine, and X-ray parameters are the gold standard to analyze the malalignment. This study aimed to develop a new 3D full body scanner to analyze the spinal balance and compare it to X-ray parameters.
Methods: Ninety-seven adult participants who suffer degenerative spondylosis underwent 3D full body scanning, whole spine X-rays, clinical questionnaires and body composition analyses.

Graphical models have long been studied in statistics as a tool for inferring conditional independence relationships among a large set of random variables. The most existing works in graphical modeling focus on the cases that the data are Gaussian or mixed and the variables are linearly dependent. In this paper, we propose a double regression method for learning graphical models under the high-dimensional nonlinear and non-Gaussian setting, and prove that the proposed method is consistent under mild conditions.

Grating under auto-collimation configuration with polarization-independent high diffraction efficiency plays an important role in the displacement measurement system, spectral beam combining system and so on. In this paper, we proposed, for the first time, a reflective two-dimensional metal-dielectric grating of which the (-1, -1) order beam is diffracted back along the input light direction, when the incident azimuth angle is 45°. With optimized structure, the (-1, -1) order diffraction efficiencies of transverse electric polarization (TE) and transverse magnetic polarization (TM) are 95.

Bilateral anophthalmia, a clinical condition characterized by the absence of globe and ocular tissues from both the orbits, presents considerable challenges to a patient's daily routine and use of prostheses. The patient's inability to orientate custom ocular prostheses (COPs) 3-dimensionally is understandable, and they typically rely on caregivers to manage the prostheses and prevent inadvertent injury to the socket. This clinical report describes the successful integration of braille script into COPs as a solution to these challenges by improving prosthesis management, decreasing caregiver dependence, and encouraging independence.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic gastrointestinal inflammatory disorder with rising prevalence. Due to the recurrent and difficult-to-treat nature of UC symptoms, current pharmacological treatments fail to meet patients' expectations. This study presents a machine learning-assisted high-throughput screening strategy to expedite the discovery of efficient nanozymes for UC treatment.
