Pain, stiffness, instability and degenerative arthritis are common sequelae of complex fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. Operations were carried out to obtain stability, followed by application of a dynamic external fixator in 20 patients with a mean age of 29 years. This provided stability and distraction, and allowed controlled passive movement. Most (70%) of the patients had a chronic lesion and the mean time from injury to surgery was 215 days (3 to 1953). The final mean range of movement was 12 to 86 degrees. Complications included redislocation and septic arthritis, which affected the outcome. Four pin-track infections and two breakages of the hinge did not influence the result. The PIP Compass hinge is a useful adjunct to surgical reconstruction of the injured PIP joint.

Ex situ living plant collections play a crucial role in providing nature-based solutions to twenty-first century global challenges. However, the complex dynamics of these artificial ecosystems are poorly quantified and understood, affecting biodiversity storage, conservation and utilization. To evaluate the management of ex situ plant diversity, we analysed a century of data comprising 2.

Since the building blocks of DNA are nonfluorescent, various external fluorescence reporters have been employed to investigate the structure, dynamics, and function of DNA G-quadruplexes (GQs) and i-motifs (iMs), which play an important role in gene regulation and expression. However, most of those fluorescence reporters lack the ability to provide site-specific structural information of interest. Therefore, it is necessary to develop fluorescent nucleoside analogues that can be covalently inserted into oligonucleotides, which not only serve this purpose, but minimize any potential perturbation towards the native structure of the DNA systems in question.

Color-tunable white organic light-emitting diodes (CT-WOLEDs) have attracted widespread attention given their large color variation to meet the different daily scenarios from the perspective of circadian rhythm. However, most reported CT-WOLEDs, especially the tri-color devices, exhibit poor performances and sophisticated structures. Here, a simple structure tri-color CT-WOLED is demonstrated that simultaneously exhibits high efficiency, ultralong operation lifetime, and wide color-tunable range for dynamic sunlight emulation.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves the recombination of diamagnetic hydroxyl (OH) or water (HO) into the paramagnetic triplet state of oxygen (O). The spin conservation of oxygen intermediates plays a crucial role in OER, however, research on spin dynamics during the catalytic process remains in its early stages. Herein, β-Ni(OH) and Fe-doped β-Ni(OH) (NiFe(OH)) are utilized as model catalysts to understand the mechanism of spin magnetic effects at iron (III) sites during OER.
