Injuries to the musculature of the posterior compartment of the calf are a frequent cause of pain, particularly among athletes. The majority of ruptures and strains in this area occur in the gastrocnemius muscle and, to a much lesser extent, in the plantaris muscle. We present a case of an unusual cause of calf pain--an isolated rupture of the soleus muscle--that developed in a 15-year-old girl after participation in a volleyball match. The injury was confirmed by T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. In this case, magnetic resonance imaging was helpful; however, the cost effectiveness of its use for this injury has yet to be proved.

Mycotic aneurysm management balances the urgency of excising infected vasculature with the need to revascularize in or near an infected field. We present a case of a 47-year-old man with sepsis, a failed kidney transplant, and a ruptured, previously stented right external iliac pseudoaneurysm. After excision of the infected pseudoaneurysm and stents, lower extremity revascularization was delayed through the innovative use of isolated limb perfusion using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation followed by staged extra-anatomic femoral-femoral bypass.

This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes and second-look arthroscopic findings between double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction for complete ACL rupture and anteromedial (AM) bundle augmentation with preservation of the posterolateral (PL) bundle in isolated AM bundle rupture. Between 2014 and 2021, we retrospectively analyzed 95 ACL reconstructions with at least 2 years of follow-up. Patients undergoing primary ACL reconstruction from January 2014 to June 2021 were included in the study.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were detected in blood samples and in cellular deposits of oxygenator membranes during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy and may be responsible for thrombogenesis. The aim was to evaluate the effect of the base material of gas fiber (GF, polymethylpentene) and heat exchange (HE) membranes and different antithrombogenic coatings on isolated granulocytes from healthy volunteers under static culture conditions. Contact of granulocytes with membranes from different ECMO oxygenators (with different surface coatings) and uncoated-GFs allowed detection of adherent cells and NETotic nuclear structures (normal, swollen, ruptured) using nuclear staining.

: Pyroptosis, an inflammatory cell death, is involved in the progression of atherosclerosis. Pyroptosis in endothelial cells (ECs) and its underlying mechanisms in atherosclerosis are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the role of a caspase-4/5-NF-κB pathway in pyroptosis in palmitic acid (PA)-stimulated ECs and EVs as players in pyroptosis.

Achilles Tendon Surgical Repair Partially Restores Early Plantar Flexor Structure and Function in a Rat Model.

J Orthop Res

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Achilles tendon ruptures significantly impair long-term patient function, with two-thirds of patients experiencing persistent functional deficits. Although nonsurgical treatment has gained popularity due to its perceived lower risk of complications, the specific effects of this approach on tendon healing, muscle function, and overall performance remain poorly understood. Directly comparing surgical and nonsurgical treatment options in a clinical population is challenging given the diverse nature of the patient population.
