Background/context: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a significant US healthcare burden with millions of lumbar spine procedures annually. Diagnostic tests are essential to guide treatment but provocative discography (PD), the most common diagnostic procedure, is without robust evidence of its value. A non-invasive alternative using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) offers a potential solution.

Social Activities and Cognitive Functioning Across Mid- and Late-Life: Evidence from China.

Gerontologist

January 2025

Department of Sociology and Criminology, University at Buffalo, SUNY, Buffalo, NY, USA.

Background And Objectives: Social engagement is positively associated with cognitive health, yet the role of these activities across the life span and in different contexts remains under-explored. This study investigates the association between social activities and two domains of cognitive functioning among middle-aged and older Chinese individuals, a population with the highest number of dementia cases in the world. We pay particular attention to the unique role of activities in midlife on cognitive decline in the later years.

A Parallel Image Denoising Network Based on Nonparametric Attention and Multiscale Feature Fusion.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

School of Electronic and Information Engineering, Ankang University, Ankang 725000, China.

Convolutional neural networks have achieved excellent results in image denoising; however, there are still some problems: (1) The majority of single-branch models cannot fully exploit the image features and often suffer from the loss of information. (2) Most of the deep CNNs have inadequate edge feature extraction and saturated performance problems. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a two-branch convolutional image denoising network based on nonparametric attention and multiscale feature fusion, aiming to improve the denoising performance while better recovering the image edge and texture information.

In mental healthcare, therapists' empathy and mentalizing are associated with better opportunities to establish positive working relations with patients. The present study aimed to explore mental health nurses' level of empathy and mentalizing (compared with reference groups studying or working in different contexts), the association between mental health nurses' level of empathy and mentalizing and sociodemographic characteristics of these nurses, and the association between mental health nurses' level of empathy and mentalizing. A cross-sectional design was used in adherence with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement.
