Carbon monoxide (CO) gas therapy, as an emerging therapeutic strategy, is promising in tumor treatment. However, the development of a red or near-infrared light-driven efficient CO release strategy is still challenging due to the limited physicochemical characteristics of the photoactivated carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (photoCORMs). Here, we discovered a novel photorelease CO mechanism that involved dual pathways of CO release via photosensitization.

The basophil activation test (BAT) has become a major cellular test for evaluating the allergenic activity of specific IgEs. The impact of the BAT is due to the ability of blood basophil granulocytes to present IgE on the high-affinity FcRI receptor and to mirror the mast cell response that elicits an acute allergic reaction. The BAT proved to be able to identify allergic patients at risk of reacting to a low dose of the allergen and/or developing life-threatening reactions and thus can significantly improve the current management of allergic patients.

Several new approach methodologies (NAMs) for skin sensitization hazard assessment have been developed, validated, and adopted in OECD test guidelines. However, work is ongoing to develop NAMs for predicting skin sensitization potency on a quantitative scale for use as a point of departure (POD) in next-generation risk assessment (NGRA).

Direct photochemical conversion of CO2 into a single carbon-based product currently represents one of the major issues in the catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this work, we demonstrate that the combination of an organic photosensitizer with a heptacoordinated iron(II) complex allows to attain a noble-metal-free photochemical system capable of efficient and selective conversion of CO2 into CO upon light irradiation in the presence of N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) as the electron and proton donor, respectively, with unprecedented performances (ΦCO up to 36%, TONCO > 1000, selectivity > 99%). As shown by transient absorption spectroscopy studies, this can be achieved thanks to the fast rates associated with the electron transfer from the photogenerated reduced dye to the catalyst, which protect the dye from parallel degradation pathways ensuring its stability along the photochemical reaction.

The blood-brain-barrier prevents many imaging agents and therapeutics from being delivered to the brain that could fight central nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and strokes. However, techniques such as the use of stapled peptides or peptide shuttles may allow payloads through, with bioconjugation achieved bio-orthogonal tetrazine/norbornene click chemistry. A series of lanthanide-tetrazine probes have been synthesised herein which could be utilised in bio-orthogonal click chemistry with peptide-based delivery systems to deliver MRI agents through the blood-brain-barrier.
