Serological characteristics of peanut allergy. | LitMetric

Serological characteristics of peanut allergy.

Clin Exp Allergy

University Child Health, Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, UK.

Published: October 1998

Background: Peanut is the most common cause of severe or fatal food-associated anaphylaxis. Studies indicate that peanut extracts contain many allergenic proteins. The identification of major and minor allergenic components is necessary for standardization of experimental and diagnostic extracts.

Objective: To identify further major and minor allergenic components of peanut extract using a large population of peanut allergics, and to relate serological findings to clinical parameters.

Methods: The crude peanut extract was fractionated by fast protein liquid chromatography and the IgE binding proteins identified by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by western blotting. Serum from 89 peanut allergics with a positive history of peanut allergy and elevated specific IgE and control serum from four atopic and four non-atopic, non-peanut allergics were used.

Results: Nineteen peanut proteins were found to bind IgE from peanut allergic sera. Over 70% of subjects reacted to protein bands of 63 and 17 kDa (consistent with Ara h 1 and Ara h 2, respectively), confirming the importance of these two proteins as major allergens. A high proportion of patient sera also bound proteins at 15, 10, 30, 18 and 51 kDa in decreasing order. The percentage of cases with sensitivity to a 15 kDa protein was found to be higher in patient groups with severe reactions to peanut.

Conclusion: This study highlights the diversity of peanut allergens. Diagnostic extracts containing a high proportion of the 15 kDa component may aid in diagnosis.

Genome-wide exploration and characterization of the RALFs and analysis of its role in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.).

BMC Plant Biol

National Demonstration Center for Experimental Plant Science Education, College of Agriculture, Guangxi University, Nanning, China.

Background: Rapid alkalinization factors (RALFs) are small peptides hormones that regulate plant growth and stress responses. Although RALFs have been identified in a broad range of land plant species, their roles in peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) remain largely unexplored.

Agricultural waste (AW) presents significant environmental challenges if not effectively managed. Recycling AW as bio-organic fertilizers (BIOs) offers a sustainable solution, improving soil health, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers, and stimulating crop growth. This study investigated the effectiveness of BIOs generated from AW composted with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), including Enterobacter sp.

Blanching is the process of removing the testa or seed coat (skin) from peanuts, and a genotype's capacity to release its testa is referred to as its blanchability. The genotype, seed quality, harvest date, level of maturity, as well as the length of time and temperature of the post-harvest storage period, are said to have an impact on the peanut's blanchability. This characteristic is of enormous economic significance in the production of food items made from peanuts.

The solid cake from plant-based milk production, rich in lipids and proteins, can be repurposed to recover valuable fractions suitable for food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical applications. This innovative study explored terpenoid-based solvents as modifiers of supercritical CO extractions to obtain ready-to-use extracts rich in fatty acids, bioactive compounds, and a protein concentrate derived from almond and peanut biorefinery. The natural mixtures of 1:1 menthol:1,8-cineole (ME:EU) and 1:2 camphor:1,8-cineole (CA:EU) used at concentrations of 7.

Background: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) affects approximately 0.5% of US children. Oral food challenges (OFCs) are frequently conducted to assess FPIES resolution in an observed setting, given the risk of severe reactions.
