Treatment of intact avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV) with dimethyl suberimidate dihydrochloride (DMS), a cross-linking agent specific for amino groups, was found to result in progressive cross-linking among viral proteins, as revealed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Free viral proteins were not cross-linked. The cross-linked protein complex with an apparent molecular weight of 50,000 daltons was studied in detail.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is one of the most harmful pathogens in the swine industry. Our previous studies demonstrated that the small extracellular domain (ECL2) of CLDN4 effectively blocks PRRSV infection. In this study, we explored the in vivo administration of swine ECL2 (sECL2) and found that it blocked HP-PRRSV infection and alleviated histopathological changes in organs.

Maturation inhibitors (MIs) block HIV-1 maturation by preventing the cleavage of the capsid protein and spacer peptide 1 (CA-SP1). Bevirimat (BVM), a first-in-class MI, displayed sub-optimal efficacy in clinical trials due to presence of SP1:V7A polymorphism in the Gag protein. This polymorphism is inherently present in HIV-1 subtype C and conferred resistance to BVM.

Purpose: Liquid biopsy technology has received widespread attention in the early diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA).
Methods: We collected bile samples from 48 patients with CCA and 48 patients with gallstones at Shandong Provincial third Hospital. We quantified bile circulating free DNA (cfDNA) of syncytin-1 and SLC7A11, calculated the correlation between syncytin-1 and SLC7A11 expression and clinical parameters by Spearman rank correlation, plotted Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, and compared the Area Under Curve (AUC) values to explored early diagnostic utility in patients.

SARS-CoV-2 is a viral infection, best studied in the context of epithelial cell infection. Epithelial cells, when infected with SARS-CoV-2 express the viral S-protein, which causes host cells to fuse together into large multi-nucleated cells known as syncytia. Because SARS-CoV-2 infections also frequently present with cardiovascular phenotypes, we sought to understand if S-protein expression would also result in syncytia formation in endothelial cells.
