Background: Pulmonary function assessment is mandatory before oncological lung resection surgery. To do so, subjects undergo a pulmonary function test (PFT) and the calculation of predicted postoperative (PPO) values to estimate the residual lung function after surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of anatomical formulae in estimating postoperative pulmonary function in patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery (MIS).

The subsuperior segment (S∗), as an atypical pulmonary segment, is located between the superior and posterior basal segments. Many thoracic surgeons have no experience with anatomical segmental resection of S∗. We present a case of the posterior approach of left S∗ segmentectomy.

Advanced-stage atypical carcinoid tumors are seldom seen in the teenaged population. Comprehensive care, extending beyond mere cancer treatment, is essential. A 16-year-old boy received a diagnosis of a 13-mm nodule in the left S lung segment with signs suggesting interlobar pleural indentation.

Currently, there is no consensus regarding the extent of surgery for stage I pulmonary carcinoid (PC) tumors, which encompass typical carcinoid (TC) and atypical carcinoid (AC) tumors. Sublobar resection includes segmental resection and wedge resection; the former is regarded as a type of anatomical resection that is better suited for tumor treatment. Therefore, it needs to be further verified whether differences exist in the effects of the two surgical methods on the survival time of patients.

Most lung carcinomas are subtyped by their morphologies; however, immunohistochemistry is usually performed when it is difficult to determine. The most reliable antibodies for distinguishing lung adenocarcinoma from squamous cell carcinoma are thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) and p40 (ΔNp63). In general, these markers are mutually exclusive in their expression of lung primary carcinoma; however, a few cases of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) with coexpression of both markers have been reported.
