[Surveillance of biocontamination of the environment of labile blood products: its role in a quality assurance program].

Published: August 1998

As part of a quality assurance approach aiming at reducing the risk of bacterial contamination of labile blood components (BC), their environment was submitted to a twofold quality control. A yearly control was carried out by the University Hospital Laboratory of Hygiene (UH-LH). Another control was regularly implemented by our Quality Control Laboratory. In accordance with this quality system, we focused our attention on decontamination procedures, control targets and the definition of an acceptable threshold. The analysis of results over 1 year showed that they can be considered as satisfactory when less than 40 CFU/100 cm2 are found. Quality sheets were developed, aimed at motivating our staff, adapting the decontamination procedures and initiating corrective measures. This quality programme allowed us to develop close collaboration links with the UH-LH and to play a role in the prevention of hospital-acquired infections.

Current metabolomics technologies can measure hundreds of chemical entities in tissue extracts with good reliability. However, long-recognized requirements to halt enzyme activities during the initial moments of sample preparation are usually overlooked, allowing marked postmortem shifts in levels of labile metabolites representing diverse pathways. In brain many such changes occur in a matter of seconds.

Introduction: Individuals with higher neurological levels of spinal cord injury (SCI) at or above the sixth thoracic segment (≥T6), exhibit impaired resting cardiovascular control and responses during upper-body exercise. Over time, impaired cardiovascular control predisposes individuals to lower cardiorespiratory fitness and thus a greater risk for cardiovascular disease and mortality. Non-invasive transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (TSCS) has been shown to modulate cardiovascular responses at rest in individuals with SCI, yet its effectiveness to enhance exercise performance acutely, or promote superior physiological adaptations to exercise following an intervention, in an adequately powered cohort is unknown.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) presents a significant concern in the context of blood transfusion safety, given its potential for transmission through contaminated blood products, and the increased viral circulation recently reported across Europe. This study examines the recent epidemiological trends of B19V in Italy, where a notable increase in B19V-positive plasma units was observed during early 2024. While routine NAT testing for B19V in individual blood donations is not currently justified, the existing screening protocols for plasma intended for industrial fractionation are crucial to ensure the safety of plasma-derived medicinal products.

Cerebellar mutism syndrome (also known as posterior fossa syndrome) has been mostly seen in pediatric patients after surgery for neoplastic disease and is characterized by mutism, with variable symptoms such as emotional lability, ataxia, apraxia, and hypotonia. While the mechanism is not precisely defined, it is thought to result from disconnections between the cortical and cerebellar brain networks. Presentation in adult patients is rare, with various etiologies including posterior fossa ischemia, hemorrhage, and tumors being most reported.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) are challenging blood cancers with limited long-term survival rates, necessitating novel therapeutic strategies. This study explored the role of Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors in enhancing ferroptosis in AML cells by modulating iron metabolism. We demonstrated that HDAC inhibitors (Entinostat and Vorinostat) sensitize AML cells to ferroptosis both in vitro and in vivo.
