It was found that the frequency of extreme situations (traumas, deaths, sudden diseases) in miners working in Spitsbergen mines (74 degree N) correlates well with heliogeomagnetic activity (local magnetic disturbances, solar proton flashes). It was shown that in winter, both an enhanced and an extremely low level of magnetic activity can affect the occurrence of extreme situations. The results obtained can be used for predicting and reducing the frequency of extreme events in the zone of the polar cap during geomagnetic disturbances.

The first seven months of the US COVID-19 pandemic saw a massive increase in COVID-19-related crowdfunding campaigns. Despite their popularity, these campaigns were rarely successful in reaching their monetary goals, with nearly 40% of them not receiving a single donation. Previous research has indicated that crowdfunding has increased inequities and disparities in wealth, and this study set out to examine the situation in Washington State, an area greatly divided socio-economically, culturally, and geographically.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFood insecurity and achieving adequate nutrition is a major global challenge, especially in vulnerable groups such as refugee communities. In West Africa, thousands of Burkina Faso refugees have crossed the border into northern Ghana due to conflict and instability in their home country. We conducted a one-off cross-sectional survey to assess household food insecurity, living conditions, and sense of security among Burkina Faso refugees currently residing in the Upper East region of Ghana.

Algae are versatile photosynthetic organisms, with remarkable adaptability and metabolic properties that allow them to live in diverse and extreme habitats, as well as holding great potential for biotechnology. They play fundamental roles in their environments, including primary production, carbon fixation, and engineering their ecosystems. Advances in research on these organisms have been lagging behind bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, but the situation is rapidly evolving thanks to the development of new tools and resources.

Topological phases have prevailed across diverse disciplines, spanning electronics, photonics, and acoustics. Hitherto, the understanding of these phases has centred on energy (frequency) bandstructures, showcasing topological boundary states at spatial interfaces. Recent strides have uncovered a unique category of bandstructures characterised by gaps in momentum, referred to as momentum bandgaps or k gaps, notably driven by breakthroughs in photonic time crystals.

(source: Gustave Flaubert, Dictionnaire des Idées Reçues). But is man the best friend of the dog? This question is legitimate when we consider living situations to which modern domestic dogs are exposed. They often do not satisfy basic animal needs.
