Intraperitoneal inflammation is an essential defence mechanism against microbial invasion of the abdominal cavity. We have recently demonstrated that a single contact with heat killed E. Coli or Staphylococcus aureus increased the intraabdominal leukocyte influx in rats later challenged by these microorganisms. The aim of the present study was to investigate some of the mechanisms of this phenomenon and to determine its effect on rats survival in an experimental model of peritonitis. The intraabdominal influx of leukocytes following intraperitoneal injection of E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus was stimulated by previous intraperitoneal injection of heat killed microbes. The phenomenon was not specific, pretreatment with E. Coli enhanced the intraperitoneal inflammatory reaction against Pseudomonas and vice versa. On the contrary, pretreating the rats with heat killed microorganisms specifically improved their survival after induction of peritonitis with live bacteria, there was no cross-protection. Heat killed staphylococcus aureus which stimulated a subsequent inflammatory reaction against heat killed E. Coli had no effect on the mortality rates of E. Coli peritonitis. In conclusion, there is no direct relationship between resistance to peritonitis and the amount of leukocytes migrating into the abdominal cavity.

Tumor heterogeneity, immune-suppressive microenvironment and the precise killing of tumor cells by drugs are important factors affecting tumor treatment. In this study, we developed environment-responsive drug delivery system (FM@IQ/PST&ZIF-8/DOX) based on ZIF-8 for tumor photothermal/immunotherapy/chemotherapy synergistic therapy. The prepared FM@IQ/PST&ZIF-8/DOX nanoplatfrom not only has highly drug loading capacity for chemotherapeutic drug-doxorubicin, but also erythrocyte membrance modified on their surface can endow their immunity-escaping property and prolong their blood circulation time.

The prevalence of noncommunicable inflammatory disease is increasing in modern urban societies, posing significant challenges to public health. Novel prevention and therapeutic strategies are needed to effectively deal with this issue. Chemo/photothermal combination therapy is a promising and practical approach for cancer treatment which calls for certain nanovehicles to achieve the spatiotemporal co-occurrence of photothermal conversion and drug delivery. Herein, we developed a montmorillonite-based Pickering emulsion equipped with a near-infrared photothermal agent (indocyanine green, ICG) and anticarcinogen (paclitaxel, PTX). With both montmorillonite and ICG functioning as interfacial stabilizers, the Pickering emulsion showed good stability and nanoscale droplet size, which were favored for cellular applications.
