The effects of ascorbic acid, sodium citrate, and sodium bicarbonate on 59Fe-transferrin, 54Mn-transferrin, and 65Zn-transferrin uptake by the receptors disposed of plasma membrane isolated from lactating mouse mammary gland cells have been investigated. The effect of 10(-2) mol/L ascorbic acid alone and in combination with NaHCO3 on the 59Fe-transferrin uptake is significant and positive. 54Mn-transferrin and 65Zn-transferrin binding to the cell receptors are influenced optimally by 0.5 mol/L sodium bicarbonate. Sodium citrate alone or in combination with other substances always has a negative effect on binding of these three metals. It is suggested that a precise mechanism may exist with large possibilities to rearrange metal uptake and its transport from blood to milk.

Background: Oxidative injury occurs in septic people, but the role of oxidative stress and antioxidants has rarely been evaluated in foals.
Objectives/hypothesis: To measure reactive oxygen species (ROS), biomarkers of oxidative injury, and antioxidants in neonatal foals. We hypothesized that ill foals would have higher blood concentrations of ROS and biomarkers of oxidative injury and lower concentrations of antioxidants compared to healthy foals.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS), a class of glycosaminoglycans covalently attached to proteins to form proteoglycans, is widely distributed in the extracellular matrix and cell surface of animal tissues. In our previous study, CS was used as a template for the synthesis of seleno-chondroitin sulfate (SeCS) through the redox reaction of ascorbic acid (Vc) and sodium selenite (NaSeO) and we found that SeCS could inhibit tumor cell proliferation and invasion. However, its effect on angiogenesis and its underlying mechanism are unknown.

A fluorescence probe for "switch-on" detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was developed based on Au nanoclusters anchored MnO nanosheets (Au NCs-MnO NSs), which were synthesized using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as template through a simple one-pot approach. In the sensing system, MnO NSs function as both energy acceptors and target identifiers, effectively quenches the fluorescence of Au NCs via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The presence of ALP catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate (AAP) to ascorbic acid (AA), reducing MnO NSs to Mn and facilitate the fluorescence recovery of Au NCs.

With the rapid development of modern science and technology and the diversification of social needs, traditional single-performance materials struggle to meet the complex and changeable application scenarios. To address the multifaceted requirements of biomedical applications, such as disease diagnosis and treatment, scientists are dedicated to developing new multifunctional biomaterials with multiple activities. BiTiO (BTO), despite its versatility and application potential, has insufficient photocatalytic performance.
