Published: March 1998

Background: Juvenile glaucoma is an uncommon form of chronic open angle glaucoma that appears between 3 and 35 years of age.

Methods: We report in this study seven cases of juvenile glaucoma that occurred in patients melanoderma.

Results: Three of them had unilateral blindness and in two others visual acuity was reduced to light perception in one eye. The intraocular pressure is above to 30 mmHg in 64.3% of the cases and a myopia was frequently associated.

Conclusion: The insidious development of this pathology and the difficulty of its diagnosis among children often result in severe clinical manifestations with high visual field defects and optic disc cuppings particularly in melanoderma patients. Recent studies have proved autosomal dominant transmission with variable penetrance for one kind of juvenile glaucoma and location of the defective gene on chromosome 1q.

Precis: Second trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage device implantation offer similar success rates for juvenile open angle glaucoma after initial trabeculectomy failure. However, second trabeculectomies required fewer medications. A quarter of patients in both groups required a third operation after 2.

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and safety of the Preserflo MicroShunt (PMS) in treating glaucoma secondary to different uveitic glaucoma (UG) types in a European population.

Methods: This study evaluated consecutive eyes with UG that received the PMS. The primary outcome measure was 12-month surgical success (≥20% IOP reduction, target IOP of 6-21 mmHg).

  • It included 3069 patients, revealing that only 16.1% underwent surgery while 93.6% were treated with medications, with specific procedures varying based on the type of glaucoma.
  • Key factors influencing the need for surgeries included having primary congenital glaucoma, higher intraocular pressure, and being younger than one year at diagnosis.

Purpose: To investigate the long-term outcomes of XEN-45 implantation for glaucoma secondary to Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)-related anterior uveitis and intermediate uveitis (IU).

Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 19 eyes with FUS, 10 eyes with JIA, and nine eyes with IU that underwent XEN-45 Gel Stent implantation. The primary outcome measure was 3-year surgical success, defined as a ≥20% reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP), with a target IOP of 6-21 mmHg.
