Published: August 1998

Reduction cranioplasty is required in selected patients when macrocephaly interferes with head control, seating, locomotion, and social acceptance. Two different surgical techniques for reduction cranioplasty in two cases of older hydrocephalic patients are described. Emphasis is placed on the basic stages of the procedure.

Objective: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) sagging brain syndrome is a disabling condition. An underlying spinal Cerebrospinal fluid leak can be identified in only a minority of patients and the success rate of non-directed treatments is low. Some of these patients have a remote history of craniectomy/cranioplasty and we report a positive response to custom implant cranioplasty revision many years after their initial cranioplasty.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the viability and impact of 3D-printed external cranial protection devices (ECPD) in preventing complications after unilateral decompressive craniectomy (DC).
  • A cohort of 44 patients was evaluated, with 24 using the ECPD and 20 receiving standard treatment, showing no significant differences in overall outcomes but a notable reduction in specific complications like subdural effusion for the ECPD group.
  • Results suggest that while the ECPD is safe and helps reduce some complications post-DC, it does not significantly enhance patient prognosis, indicating the need for additional research.

The absence of guidelines for managing gunshot wounds to the head (GSWH) with bihemispheric lesions in pediatric patients highlights the need for prompt and diverse damage control strategies. This article aims to systematically evaluate the evidence surrounding the management of GSWH in preschoolers and to report a novel approach. We present a case of a 4-year-old girl who sustained a gunshot wound to the left parietal region.

Reduction cranioplasty may be indicated to address functional or cosmetic sequelae of hydrocephalic macrocephaly. With the advent of CAD/CAM digital workflow, surgeons can design and fabricate craniotomy guides, templates, and models that allow for precise cranial reconstruction. Although there are several advantages of virtual planning, pre-determined surgical plans may limit intraoperative flexibility, requiring surgeons to troubleshoot errors in pre-operative planning or model design.
