Nine patients with congenital deciduous and permanent adentia are described for the first time in Russia. Published reports are reviewed and recommendations on the DNA and prenatal diagnosis offered, which permit detecting women at a high risk of giving birth to handicapped children.

In cases of agenesis of the mandibular second premolar, a choice can be made from among several treatment options. Besides preserving the second primary molar, it can be decided to close the diastema orthodontically, following extraction of the primary molar. This can be done in several ways: full or partial (hemisection) removal of the primary molar.

Congenital tooth agenesis is a type of craniofacial developmental anomaly with reduced number of teeth, which is caused by disturbances in tooth germ development. If the number of missing teeth is less than six (excluding the third molars), it is termed as hypodontia. The second premolars are most commonly affected.
