Abnormally fertilized embryos are often discarded during in vitro fertilization due to the fact that known chromosomal ploidy abnormalities lead to implantation failure or pregnancy loss. The objective of this study was to determine if pronuclear numeration (PN) observed at fertilization check is representative of the true ploidy status of the subsequent developing blastocyst in order to maximize the number of viable embryos available for infertility patients and increase their chances of conception. Upon successful fertilization, pronuclear numeration was noted, and zygotes were cultured to the blastocyst stage.

Sex-specific anatomical variation of circle of Willis arteries.

Neuroimage

January 2025

Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, University Medical Center Utrecht Brain Center, University Medical Center Utrecht, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: Anatomical variations in the circle of Willis (CoW) arteries are common and can affect hemodynamic stress, thereby influencing the risk of cerebrovascular pathology. Previous studies have suggested sex differences in CoW anatomy, but findings vary due to limited study population size and different measurement methods. This study aims to investigate sex differences in artery diameters, anatomical variants and bifurcation angles of the CoW using a large population cohort and semi-automatic measurements.

Background: Pulmonary artery stenosis, neoaortic dilatation, and neoaortic valve insufficiency are among the most frequent complications of the arterial switch operation for repair of dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA). It remains difficult to predict which patients will require great arterial reintervention.

Objective: We aimed to characterize hemodynamics within the great arteries using 4D flow MRI in patients with d-TGA after the arterial switch operation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on creating a machine learning pipeline that can segment brain tumors in medical images using only binary image-level classification labels, eliminating the need for expensive and time-consuming manual annotations.
  • The method combines a deep superpixel generation model and a clustering model that work together to produce weakly supervised tumor segmentations while utilizing a classifier to improve accuracy by focusing on undersegmented areas.
  • The new pipeline was evaluated using MRI scans from the BraTS 2020 and BraTS 2023 datasets, achieving promising results in segmentation performance compared to existing state-of-the-art methods.
