Drainage in thyroid surgery, although still controversial, is used at our service routinely, as it guarantees the output of serum, sometimes abundant after thyroidectomy, and allows the immediate check of hemorrhage. It is nevertheless known that the presence of drainage can favour the occurrence of infection of the surgical bed. Through a randomized trial, we tested the incidence of sepsis after thyroidectomy, using in one group a double open Silastic drain and in another group a double aspirative drain. We registered 3 cases of wound infection and 4 cases of seroma in the group treated with open drainage versus one case of wound infection and 2 cases of seroma in the group treated with aspirative drainage. Such difference, although evident, did not result significant. Nevertheless, it is our opinion to conclude that the aspirative draining system guarantees a better sterility of the surgical wound, and therefore a lower incidence of wound complications.

Background: Cinnamon has been studied as a possible way to control blood glucose and serum cholesterol levels. However, there are no well-conducted randomized controlled trials that can accurately measure the lipid and glucose-lowering effects of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (C. zeylanicum) extract.

Background: Endometrial cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer among females and about 97,000 global deaths of endometrial cancer. The changes in the trends of obesity, fertility rates and other risk factors in South Africa (SA) may impact the endometrial cancer trends. The aim of this study was to utilise the age period cohort and join point regression modelling to evaluate the national and ethnic trends in endometrial cancer mortality in South Africa over a 20year period (1999-2018).

Purpose: Peripheral optics have been suggested to play a role in myopia progression, with accommodation responses also considered a potential contributor. This study aimed to investigate whether modifications in peripheral optics through different spectacle lenses affect accommodation responses.

Methods: Dynamic accommodation responses were assessed using a double-pass instrument while switching the target from distance (3 m for 3 seconds) to near (0.
