We present an infant with severe familial hyperinsulinism in whom glucose production rate, lipolysis, and gluconeogenesis from glycerol were measured by use of glucose and glycerol labelled with stable isotopes. Administration of a single dose of glucagon (0.1 mg/kg) caused an increase in glucose production rate by near 140% from 4.2 to 10.1 mg.kg-1.min-1. The rate of appearance of glycerol, reflecting the rate of lipolysis, decreased from 15.1 to 12.6 micromol. kg-1.min-1. The amount of glycerol converted to glucose by gluconeogenesis was 9.1 micromol.kg-1.min-1 before and 10.5 micromol. kg-1.min-1 after glucagon administration. We conclude that the marked rise in glucose production rate was mainly the result of increased glycogenolysis. Following the trial, the child was started on long-acting (zinc-protamine) glucagon which made it possible to discontinue intravenous treatment with glucose.

Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the most common treatments for cancer. However, intracellular glutathione (GSH) plays a key role in protecting cancer from radiation damage. Herein, we have developed a platelet membrane biomimetic nanomedicine (PMD) that induces double GSH consumption to enhance tumor radioimmunotherapy.

Skeletal muscle (SM) is essential for movement, stability, and overall body function, and it readily adapts to changes in energy demand. Myogenesis is energy-intensive and involves complex molecular and cellular events. We recently demonstrated that the absence of lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) significantly impacts the SM phenotype, primarily by disrupting energy homeostasis and reducing ATP production.

This study evaluated the effects of chemical modification, including ethanol, acetic acid, and natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), on the secondary and tertiary structures, hydrophobicity, free amine content, protein-protein interactions, and functional properties of zein. The NADES used included choline chloride: oxalic acid, choline chloride: urea, choline chloride: glycerol, and glucose: citric acid. The results reveal that the NADES system significantly altered zein's structures, as evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence, and Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy analysis.

Maximizing saccharification efficiency of lignocellulose and minimizing the production costs associated with enzyme requirements are crucial for sustainable biofuel production. This study presents a novel semi-fed-batch saccharification method that uses a co-culture of and strain A9 to efficiently break down high solid-loading lignocellulosic biomass without the need for any external enzymes. This method optimizes saccharification efficiency and enhances glucose production from alkaline-treated rice straw, a representative lignocellulosic biomass.

Halophilic bacteria are promising candidates for biofuel production because of their efficient cellulose degradation. Their cellulases exhibit high activity, even in the presence of inhibitors and under extreme conditions, making them ideal for biorefinery applications. In this study, we isolated a strain of (Kadal6) from decomposed cotton cloth on a Rameshwaram seashore.
