Background: Taurine and betaine are important nutrients in and have many important biological properties. To investigate the characteristics of taurine and betaine contents and identify SNPs associated with traits in the , we cloned the full-length cDNA of key genes in taurine and betaine (unpublished data) metabolism, determined taurine and betaine content and gene expression in different tissues and months of specimen collection, and developed SNPs in the gene coding region.
Results: We cloned the full-length cDNA of cysteine dioxygenase () and cysteine sulfite decarboxylase (), which are key genes involved in taurine metabolism in , and found that betaine and taurine contents and the expression of key genes were regulated by seawater salinity.

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is rich in taurine, a conditionally essential amino acid functioning in anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-aging, osmoregulation, and neuromodulation. Breeding oyster varieties with enhanced taurine content is significant to meet people's demand for high-quality oysters. In the present study, polymorphisms in the oyster cysteamine dioxygenase (CgADO) gene that encodes the central enzyme of the cysteamine pathway for taurine synthesis were investigated, and their association with taurine content was assessed in the Changhai (CH) and Qinhuangdao (QHD) populations.

Although more sustainable, feeding fish solely plant protein (PP) deteriorates their fillet quality more than animal counterparts, which additives can alleviate. This study investigated the effects of supplementing high PP diets with two additive mixtures on the fillet quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish (∼2.

Background: There are important inter-relationships between miRNAs and metabolites: alterations in miRNA expression can be induced by various metabolic stimuli, and miRNAs play a regulatory role in numerous cellular processes, impacting metabolism. While both specific miRNAs and metabolites have been identified for their role in childhood asthma, there has been no global assessment of the combined effect of miRNAs and the metabolome in childhood asthma.
Methods: We performed miRNAome-metabolome-wide association studies ('miR-metabo-WAS') in two childhood cohorts of asthma to evaluate the contemporaneous and persistent miRNA-metabolite associations: 1) Genetic Epidemiology of Asthma in Costa Rica Study (GACRS) (N = 1121); 2) the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP) (N = 312 and N = 454).

Lacking of suitable fish muscle stem cell line has greatly hindered the fabrication of cell-cultured fish meat. Here, we established and characterized a spontaneously immortalized marine fish muscle stem cell line (EfMS) from brown-marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus), which could actively proliferate with good genetic stability and well maintain the stemness of myogenesis potential for over 50 passages. Taurine was found to be able to serve as a substitute of fish muscle extract in maintaining stemness.
