Over recent years, the retina has been increasingly investigated as a potential biomarker for dementia. A number of studies have looked at the effect of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology on the retina and the associations of AD with visual deficits. However, while OCT-A has been explored as a biomarker of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), studies identifying the specific retinal changes and mechanisms associated with cSVD are lacking.

Current cancer screening methods are effective for detecting early stage cancers and even preventing some cancers, but their effectiveness has only been demonstrated for a handful of cancers, and for many cancers, there are no screening tests clinically available. In addition, the majority of the screening methods are not ideal, resulting in suboptimal compliance and the occurrence of preventable cancers. A screening test that is convenient, safe, accurate and that can screen for multiple cancers is an ideal screening test that would address many of the shortcomings of the current tests.

A highly sensitive and colorimetric fluorescent sensor for visualizing Zn in aqueous solution.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

January 2025

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Qiqihar University, Qiqihar 161006 China. Electronic address:

A new colorimetric fluorescent sensor QPEBT was developed by merging the N,N-di(2-picolyl)ethane-1,2-diamine and 2,2'-bithiophene moieties into the quinolimide backbone. QPEBT could sensitively detect Zn through the remarkable fluorescence enhancement with distinct color changes from light orange to pink in visible light and from ginger to orange-yellow in 365 nm UV irradiation. The 1:1 stoichiometry between QPEBT and Zn was verified by the spectra titrations, Job's and HRMS analyses, and theoretical calculations.

Enhanced chemiluminescence of luminol via InS/MXene composite as a novel Co-reactant accelerator for UV-filter Benzophenone-3 determination.

Talanta

January 2025

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Organic Pollution Prevention and Control, School of Biomedical Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen, Shenzhen, 518055, China. Electronic address:

In this study, a novel In₂S₃/MXene composite was developed as a co-reactant accelerator to enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) performance of the classical luminol-H₂O₂ system. The In₂S₃ and MXene heterojunction catalyzed the CL reaction through synergistic effect, facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species and increasing CL intensities. This enhanced system was applied for the first time to detect an ultraviolet (UV) filter-benzophenone-3 (BP-3) by leveraging its light absorption property.

Evaluating plasma biomarkers NfL, GFAP, GDF15, and FGF21 as indicators of disease severity in Charcot-Marie Tooth patients.

Front Neurol

January 2025

14th European Reference Network in Neuromuscular Disorders (EURO-NMD), Scientific Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, Riga Stradins University, Riga, Latvia.

Background: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a slowly advancing hereditary nerve disorder, presents a significant challenge in the medical field. Effective drugs for treatment are lacking, and we struggle to find sensitive markers to track the disease's severity and progression. In this study, our objective was to investigate the levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL), glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) and growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) in individuals with CMT and to compare them to a control group.
