A novel three-dimensional co-culture model for studying exosome-mediated cell interactions in glioblastoma.

Biochim Biophys Acta Gen Subj

January 2025

Institute of Digestive Disease, Affiliated Qingyuan Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, Qingyuan People's Hospital, Qingyuan, Guangdong 511518, PR China. Electronic address:

Three-dimensional(3D) cell culture systems provide a larger space for cell proliferation, which is crucial for simulating cellular behavior and drug responses in the tumor microenvironment. In this study, we developed a novel 3D co-culture system for cell interactions, utilizing a commercialized bioreactor-microcarrier system. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were extracted via enzymatic digestion, and markers CD105 and CD31 were identified.

Toward Large-Scale Photonic Chips Using Low-Anisotropy Thin-Film Lithium-Tantalate.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

College of Optical Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China.

Photonic manipulation of large-capacity data with the advantages of high speed and low power consumption is a promising solution for explosive growth demands in the era of post-Moore. A well-developed lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform has been widely explored for high-performance electro-optic (EO) modulators to bridge electrical and optical signals. However, the photonic waveguides on the x-cut LNOI platform suffer serious polarization-mode conversion/coupling issues because of strong birefringence, making it hard to realize large-scale integration.

Wireless microwave-to-optical conversion via programmable metasurface without DC supply.

Nat Commun

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves, School of Information Science and Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, China.

Microwave-optical interaction and its effective utilization are vital technologies at the frontier of classical and quantum sciences for communication, sensing, and imaging. Typically, state-of-the-art microwave-to-optical converters are realized by fiber and circuit approaches with multiple processing steps, and external powers are necessary, which leads to many limitations. Here, we propose a programmable metasurface that can achieve direct and high-speed free-space microwave-to-laser conversion.

Key Laboratory of Photonic Technology for Integrated Sensing and Communication, Ministry of Education of China, Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou, 510006, China.

Common-signal-induced synchronization of semiconductor lasers have promising applications in physical-layer secure transmission with high speed and compatibility with the current fiber communication. Here, we propose an ultra-long-distance laser synchronization scheme by utilizing random digital optical communication signal as the common drive signal. By utilizing the long-haul optical coherent communication techniques, high-fidelity fiber transmission of the digital drive can be achieved and thus ultra-long-distance synchronization is expected.

As the demand for high-speed, low-latency communication continues to grow, free-space optical (FSO) communication has gained prominence as a promising solution for supporting the next generation of wireless networks, especially in the context of the 5G and beyond era. It offers high-speed, low-latency data transmission over long distances without the need for a physical infrastructure. However, the deployment of FSO systems faces significant challenges, such as atmospheric turbulence, weather-induced signal degradation, and alignment issues, all of which can impair performance.
