The Biomek 2000 Laboratory Automation Workstation is used for liquid handling and other repetitive operations in many laboratories. Since it has very good spatial positioning capabilities, we have modified this workstation to deliver samples at high densities onto microscope slides to produce DNA microarrays. The workstation tool, originally designed for bacterial colony replication, was adapted to carry special printing pins and was further modified to improve its positional accuracy. Software written in the Tool Command Language was concurrently developed to control the movements of the workstation arm during the process of printing. With these modifications, the workstation can reliably deliver individual samples at a spacing of 0.5 mm, corresponding to a total of more than 3000 samples on a single slide. Arrays prepared in this way were successfully tested in hybridization experiments.

Automated platforms used for forensic casework sample DNA extraction need to be versatile to accommodate a wide variety of sample types, thus protocols frequently need modification. In this study, DNA IQ methods previously developed for the Biomek 2000 Automation Workstation were adapted for the Teleshake Unit using normal volumes and all deepwell extraction, and a large volume DNA IQ method developed. DNA purification without detectable contamination of adjacent reagent blanks is reported in the extraction of tissue samples containing several micrograms of DNA.

Here, we provide methods for the creation of protein microarrays in microplates. The microplate consists of 96 wells with each well capable of holding a protein microarray at a spot density of up to 400 (20 x 20) individual elements. Arrays of capture monoclonal antibodies, corresponding to specific interleukins, were printed onto the bottom of the wells which had been surface activated for covalent attachment.

A rugged, sensitive and efficient liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for the quantitative analysis of firocoxib in urine from 5 to 3000 ng/mL and in plasma from 1 to 3000 ng/mL. The method requires 200 microL of either plasma or urine and includes sample preparation in 96-well solid phase extraction (SPE) plates using a BIOMEK 2000 Laboratory Automated Workstation. Chromatographic separation of firocoxib from matrix interferences was achieved using isocratic reversed phase chromatography on a PHENOMENEX LUNA Phenyl-Hexyl column.

A large-scale, high-efficiency and low-cost platform based on a Beckman Coulter Biomek FX and custom-made automation systems for structural genomics has been set up at Peking University, Beijing, People's Republic of China. This platform has the capacity to process up to 2000 genes per year for structural and functional analyses. Bacillus subtilis, a model organism for Gram-positive bacteria, and Streptococcus mutans, a major pathogen of dental caries, were selected as the main targets.

Human genome, pharmaceutical and research laboratories have long enjoyed the application of robotics to performing repetitive laboratory tasks. However, the utilization of robotics in forensic laboratories for processing casework samples is relatively new and poses particular challenges. Since the quantity and quality (a mixture versus a single source sample, the level of degradation, the presence of PCR inhibitors) of the DNA contained within a casework sample is unknown, particular attention must be paid to procedural susceptibility to contamination, as well as DNA yield, especially as it pertains to samples with little biological material.
