Viral inactivation in superoxide dismutase (SOD) derived from human red cells was carried out by ultraviolet light C (UVC) irradiation. With 400 J/m2 UVC irradiation, the titer of canine parvovirus (CPV, a nonenveloped virus), M13 bacteriophage (M13, a nonenveloped phage) and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV, an enveloped virus), which were spiked into SOD solution, were reduced by > 4.6 log10 (detection limit), 7.0 log10 and 6.2 log10, respectively. The SOD activity was maintained and the band pattern of SOD on an electrophoresis gel was not changed even by 1000 J/m2 UVC irradiation. These results indicate that UVC irradiation is a promising method for the inactivation of both enveloped and nonenveloped viruses in SOD preparations while maintaining its activity.

This study investigated the survival of human rotavirus (HRV) on fresh beef, chicken, and lettuce stored at various temperatures, as well as the effect of UV-C exposure on HRV viability on these food surfaces. At 20 °C, the survival rate of three HRV strains (WA, 89-12C2, and DS-1) on beef, chicken, and lettuce decreased within 3 days, with the most significant reduction observed on beef. When stored at 4 °C, a significant reduction in HRV viability was observed by day 7, with the greatest decrease observed on beef, followed by chicken and lettuce.

Inclusion complexation of the sunscreen ingredient avobenzone (AVB) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was investigated to improve its aqueous solubility and photostability; another ultraviolet (UV) filter, oxybenzone (OXB), and the phytochemical antioxidant curcumin (CUR) served as a comparison. In this study, the 1-octanol/water partition coefficients, acid dissociation constants, phase-solubility diagrams with β-CD, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectral changes induced by UVA1 (365 nm) irradiation were evaluated. β-CD at concentrations 50-100 times that of AVB most effectively protected the photostability of AVB.
