[Upper esophageal duplication. Apropos of a case disclosed by respiratory distress].

Service de Radio-Pédiatrie, Hôpital d'Enfants, CHU Ibn-Rochd, Casablanca, Maroc.

Published: June 1998

The authors report a new case of cystic oesophageal duplication, discovered in a 10-month-old infant. This case is unusual because of its site: thoraco-cervical, and its acute clinical manifestations: respiratory depression. A surgical resection was performed after Barium swallow, chest X-ray and ultrasonography. Surgery ensured rapid clinical improvement. Pathology confirmed the diagnosis of cystic oesophageal duplication.

Oesophageal duplication cysts are a subtype of foregut cysts, associated with the presence of ectopic gastric mucosa. Gastric acid secreted by this mucosa can lead to complications. We report one such unusual case of complication leading to the formation of broncho-oesophageal fistula in a duplication cyst.

To analyze the efficacy of curative endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for patients with early cardia and non-cardia gastric cancer. Clinical data of patients with early gastric cancer who underwent curative ESD treatment in the Department of Gastroenterology, Zhongda Hospital, Southeast University from August 2016 to July 2023 were retrospectively collected. According to the location of lesions and postoperative pathology, the patients were divided into cardia group (early cardia gastric cancer and high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia) and non-cardia group.

Background: The coexistence of two or more distinct neoplasms within the same anatomical site characterizes collision tumors. While the presence of dual tumors is frequently observed in esophageal cases, the simultaneous occurrence of three distinct tumor types is extremely rare, posing significant challenges for pathological evaluation and diagnosis. Surgical resection remains the primary treatment, with generally favorable outcomes.

Indices of healthy and unhealthy plant-based diets and the risk of selected digestive cancers.

Clin Nutr

January 2025

Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, Dipartimento di Eccellenza 2023-2027, University of Milan, Milan, Italy.

Background & Aims: The relation between various types of plant-based diets and cancer risk is still unclear. We examined the association of the overall plant-based diet index (PDI) and healthy (hPDI) and unhealthy plant-based diet indices (uPDI) with the risk of selected digestive cancers.

Methods: We used data from a network of hospital-based case-control studies including 942 oral/pharyngeal, 304 esophageal, 230 stomach, 1953 colorectal, and 326 pancreatic cancer cases.

Article Synopsis
  • - Oesophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital malformations that can cause symptoms like difficulty swallowing, stomach pain, or respiratory issues, and may lead to serious complications requiring surgery.
  • - A 55-year-old woman underwent various imaging tests that showed a tumor near the oesophagogastric junction, leading to a decision for laparoscopic surgery to remove it, which confirmed it was a non-malignant mucinous cyst.
  • - Due to the uncertain relation between the cyst and the oesophageal wall, more extensive surgery (lower oesophagectomy and proximal gastrectomy) was performed instead of just removing the cyst.
