The predictions of three models are compared with respect to existing experimental data on the perception of the Fourcin pitch (FP) and the dichotic repetition pitch (DRP). Each model generates a central spectrum (CS), which is examined for peaks at frequencies consistent with the perceived pitches. A modified equalization-cancellation (mE-C) model of binaural unmasking [Culling and Summerfield, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 98, 785-797 (1995)] generates a CS which reflects the degree of interaural decorrelation present in each frequency channel. This model accounts for the perceived frequencies of FPs, but produces no output for DRP stimuli. A restricted equalization-cancellation (rE-C) model [Bilsen and Goldstein, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 55, 292-296 (1974)] sums the time-varying excitation in corresponding frequency channels, without equalization, to form a CS. A central activity pattern (CAP) model [Raatgever and Bilsen, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 80, 429-441 (1986)] generates a CS by scanning an interaural cross-correlation matrix across frequency. The rE-C and CAP models yield inaccurate predictions of the perceived frequencies of FPs, but predict the occurrence of the DRP and its correct pitch. The complementary predictions of the mE-C model compared to the rE-C and CAP models, together with the evidence that the FP is clearly audible for the majority of listeners, while the DRP is faintly heard by a minority of listeners, suggest that the mE-C model provides the best available account of the FP, and that the DRP is produced by a separate mechanism.

Discovery of a molecular glue for EGFR degradation.

Aberrant expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of various tumors, potentially representing a target for therapeutic intervention. Nonetheless, EGFR remains a challenging protein to target pharmacologically in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). An emerging approach to address the removal of such proteins is the application of molecular glue (MG) degraders.

The standard of care for non-metastatic muscle invasive bladder cancer is either radical cystectomy or bladder preservation therapy, which consists of maximal transurethral bladder resection of the tumor followed by concurrent chemoradiation with a cisplatin-based regimen. However, for older cancer patients who are too frail for surgical resection or have decreased renal function, radiotherapy alone may offer palliation. Recently, immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) has emerged as a promising treatment when combined with radiotherapy due to the synergy of those two modalities.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on non-Kranz C photosynthesis, particularly the NAD-ME subtype, in developing wheat grains at 14 days post-anthesis (dpa), utilizing RNA-seq data for analysis.
  • Researchers examined the gene expression profiles for C photosynthesis across different tissues (outer pericarp, inner pericarp, and endosperm) in the grains, finding that all tissues play a role in this process.
  • A new model suggesting the involvement of multiple cell types for the refixation of respired CO2 in these grains is proposed, although it still needs more biochemical validation.

Using density functional theory (DFT) B3PW91/TZVP, M06/TZVP, and OPBE/TZVP chemistry models and the Gaussian09 program, a quantum-chemical calculation of geometric and thermodynamic parameters of Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) macrotetracyclic chelates, with (NNNN)-coordination of ligand donor centers arising during template synthesis between the indicated ions of elements, thiocarbohydrazide HN-HN-C(=S)-NH-NH and diacetyl Me-C(=O)-C(=O)-Me, in gelatin-immobilized matrix implants was performed. The key bond lengths and bond angles in these coordination compounds are provided, and it is noted that in all these complexes the MN chelate sites, the grouping of N atoms bonded to the M atom, and the five-membered and six-membered metal chelate rings are practically coplanar. NBO analysis of these compounds was carried out, on the basis of which it was shown that all these complexes, in full accordance with theoretical expectations, are low-spin complexes.

Alkyne-alkenyl coupling at a diruthenium complex.

Dalton Trans

University of Pisa, Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, Via G. Moruzzi 13, I-56124 Pisa, Italy.

Dimetallic complexes are suitable platforms for the assembly of small molecular units, and the reactivity of bridging alkenyl ligands has been widely investigated to model C-C bond forming processes. Here, we report the unusual coupling of an alkenyl ligand, bridging coordinated on a diruthenium scaffold, with a series of alkynes, revealing two possible outcomes. The diruthenium complex [RuCp(Cl)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-η:η-C(Ph)CH(Ph)}], 2, was prepared in two steps from [RuCp(CO)(μ-CO){μ-η:η-C(Ph)CH(Ph)}]BF, [1]BF4, in 69% yield.
