Environmental heat illnesses range from irksome to devastating. People at particular risk are the elderly, the chronically mentally ill, the community-dwelling developmentally delayed, people without social contacts, athletes, and those without access to air-conditioning. Because heat-related deaths are preventable, community-wide response to heat emergencies, together with individual and community education programs, could greatly decrease morbidity and mortality.

Heat stroke (HS) represents a life‑endangering condition that is due to an imbalance between heat generation and dissipation, owing to exposure to hot environments or strenuous exercise. HS is a medical condition that is gaining increased prevalence throughout the world due to a steady rise in temperature, and massive mortalities have been recorded among vulnerable populations. In 2024, extreme heat waves led to increased cases of HS and related fatalities globally, particularly in Karachi, Pakistan.

Heat waves are a significant environmental issue threatening global human health. Extreme temperatures can lead to various heat-related illnesses, with heatstroke being among the most severe. Currently, there are no effective treatments to mitigate the multi-organ damage caused by heatstroke.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are creating unprecedented climate-driven extreme weather, with levels of heat and humidity surpassing human physiological tolerance for heat stress. These conditions create a risk of mass casualties, with some populations particularly vulnerable due to physiological, behavioural and socioeconomic conditions (eg, lack of adequate shelter, limited healthcare infrastructure, sparse air conditioning access and electrical grid vulnerabilities). Children, especially young children, are uniquely vulnerable to extreme heat-related morbidity and mortality due to factors including low body mass, high metabolism, suboptimal thermoregulatory mechanisms and behavioural vulnerabilities.

Objectives: This study focuses on mild-to-moderate severity cases to examine the triggers initiating kidney injury.

Materials: Patients aged ≥18 years with suspected heat-related illnesses at the Juntendo University Hospital Emergency and Primary Care Center between July and September 2020 and June and August 2022 were included.

Methods: Blood samples were obtained during their visit, and the patients were categorized into two groups based on their cystatin-based estimated GFR (eGFRcys) values: a kidney injury group (eGFRcys < 60 mL/min/1.

Background: The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will mark the debut of squash, a high-intensity sport characterized by repeated efforts, posing potential thermoregulatory challenges. The demanding nature of squash results in substantial metabolic heat production, with consequential heat strain exacerbated by the indoor environment of squash courts, where low to moderate evaporative potential limits effective cooling. Players often experience increased body-heat storage and thermal strain, with muscle cramps (an early warning sign of more severe heat-related illnesses) commonly observed during tournaments.
