Interactions between human neutrophils and Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease spirochete, were studied by dark-field microscopy combined with video technology. A previously unrecognized mechanism for neutrophils to phagocytize the spirochete was discovered. During phagocytosis, the spirochete attaches to the neutrophil head-on, the neutrophil forms a thin tubelike protrusion around the bacterium, and the fully covered spirochete is drawn into the cell.

Objective: Contact hypersensitivity (CHS), or allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), is an inflammatory skin disorder characterized by an exaggerated allergic reaction to specific haptens. During this delayed-type allergic reaction, the first contact with the allergen initiates the sensitization phase, forming memory T cells. Upon repeated contact with the hapten, the elicitation phase develops, activating mostly macrophages, cytotoxic T cells, and neutrophilic granulocytes.

Thrombosis is a critical complication in lymphomas, driven by chronic inflammation. To observe this systemic mechanism, we evaluated inflammatory cytokines, neutrophil and monocyte activation, and platelet function in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), follicular lymphoma (FL), and Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), with and without thrombosis using ELISA and flow cytometry according to laboratory and clinical data. Interleukin-1β was elevated across lymphomas and inversely correlated with the Khorana score for venous thromboembolism, while increased tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) was inversely associated with the International Prognostic Index (IPI) in thrombosis-associated lymphomas.

Neutrophils play a key role in inflammatory responses and thrombosis, but their complex interactions in disease pathogenesis are not fully understood. This review examines the multifaceted roles of neutrophils, focusing on their activation, cytokine release, and formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which contribute to host defense and thrombosis. We discuss the interaction between inflammation and coagulation, the direct effect of neutrophils on thrombus stability, and their involvement in pathological thrombotic diseases.
