Disordered lingual function is a common clinical attribute of patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia. To determine physiologic patterns of lingual tissue motion during swallowing, we imaged the actively deforming tongue during water bolus swallows with sequential single-slice sagittal orientation echo-planar imaging. At rest, with the bolus contained in the oral cavity before swallow initiation, the tongue displayed a characteristic curved configuration consisting of a convex surface (anterior to the bolus) in continuity with a concave surface (containing the bolus) and a posterior-located convex surface (comprising the tongue base). With swallow initiation, the previously deformed tongue underwent rapid biphasic displacement: (a) superior displacement of the anterior tongue and deepening of the midposterior-located bolus-containing concavity, resulting in a laterally beveled surface encompassing the bolus; and (b) retrograde displacement of the configured tissue, resulting in clearance of the bolus from the oral cavity to the oropharynx. These findings indicate that deglutitive tongue action can be depicted by echo-planar imaging as a series of deformative surface modifications, which are related to the activity of intrinsic and extrinsic lingual muscles.

Objectives: Ultrasound is a promising low-risk imaging modality that can provide objective airway measurements that may circumvent limitations of drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE). This study was devised to identify ultrasound-derived anatomical measurements that could accurately predict collapse pattern and location based on the VOTE criteria (VOTE: Velum, Oropharynx, Tongue, and Epiglottis).
Methods: Ultrasonography was performed on 20 adult patients of various airway subsites while awake and sedated with concurrent endoscopy performed during drug-induced sleep.

Objectives: The study aims to investigate the relationship between the presence of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and obstruction levels identified during drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among nonobese patients.
Methods: We conducted a prospective study of 105 adult patients diagnosed with OSA who underwent DISE using propofol sedation from 2019 to 2024 at a tertiary hospital. To control for the confounding impact of obesity on LPR, the study selectively enrolled individuals presenting a body mass index within the normal range.
Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) has become a valuable tool in the field of biomedical research due to its ability to quantify refractive index variations of live cells and tissues. For example, three-dimensional differential phase contrast (3D DPC) imaging uses through-focus images captured under different illumination patterns deconvoluted with a computed 3D phase transfer function (PTF) to reconstruct the 3D refractive index. In conventional 3D DPC with semi-circular illumination, partially spatially coherent illumination often diminishes phase contrast, exacerbating inherent noise, and can lead to a large number of zero values in the 3D PTF, resulting in strong low-frequency artifacts and deteriorating imaging resolution.

Background: Human papillomavirus-associated oral epithelial dysplasia (HPV-OED) has been recently recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a distinct type of oral epithelial dysplasia. The rarity of HPV-OED, together with gaps in the current understanding of risk factors and clinical behaviour raise the risk of under-recognition and misdiagnosis. To address this, we describe the clinico-pathological features of a consecutive series of HPV-OED from a single institution to provide additional insight into the presentation and behaviour of this disease.

In this work, we investigate the dynamics of a discrete-time prey-predator model considering a prey reproductive response as a function of the predation risk, with the prey population growth factor governed by two parameters. The system can evolve toward scenarios of mutual or only of predators extinction, or species coexistence. We analytically show all different types of equilibrium points depending on the ranges of growth parameters.
