Serum glycoproteins in schistosomiasis.

Am J Trop Med Hyg

Published: September 1976

Serum glycoprotein electrophoretic fractions as well as protein bound hexose and seromucoid levels were measured in 21 male Egyptian patients before and after treatment for schistosomiasis, and in 8 normal controls. Results indicate that alpha1 and gamma-glycoprotein were significantly higher while beta-glycoprotein was lower in bilharzial patients than in controls. Protein-bound hexose and seromucoid levels were also significantly elevated in the patients. After treatment, the levels of these fractions approached those of the controls.

Relative handgrip strength correlates inversely with increased body fat, inflammatory markers and increased serum lipids in young, healthy adults - The LBA study.

Diabetes Res Clin Pract

January 2024

The Biomedical Platform, Department of Natural Science and Biomedicine, School of Health and Welfare, Jönköping University, Jönköping, Sweden.

Background: Handgrip strength (HGS) is a surrogate marker of whole body strength that has been observed to correlate inversely with the metabolic syndrome (MetS). In this study, we examined whether HGS in young, healthy individuals, was associated with surrogate endpoints of the MetS. A secondary goal was to examine whether absolute HGS (absHGS) or relative HGS (relHGS) was a stronger predictor of MetS.

Short linear peptide fragments of placental trophoblastic β1-glycoprotein (PSG) (YECE, YQCE, YVCS, and YACS) were studied in the context of their immunomodulatory effects at the level of inflammatory markers. The original host-versus-graft model was used in male Wistar rats without prior conditioning of recipient bone marrow. A composition of PSG peptide fragments was injected to animals after allogeneic transplantation of bone marrow cells in a dynamic experiment, inflammatory markers α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP, orosomucoid), α2-macroglobulin (α2M) were assayed by ELISA, and biochemical parameters (total protein, glucose, creatinine, and urea) were measured.

Role of liquid fructose/sucrose in regulating the hepatic transcriptome in a high-fat Western diet model of NAFLD.

J Nutr Biochem

February 2023

Department of Nutritional Sciences; Boshell Metabolic Diseases and Diabetes Program, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, USA. Electronic address:

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which ranges from simple steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is the most common chronic liver disease. Yet, the molecular mechanisms for the progression of steatosis to NASH remain largely undiscovered. Thus, there is a need for identifying specific gene and pathway changes that drive the progression of NAFLD.

Introduction: Circulating orosomucoid, an acute-phase protein, predicted type 2 diabetes mellitus risk in several Western countries. Here, we assessed serum orosomucoid (ORM) in relation to prediabetes in the Japanese.

Research Design And Methods: Participants consisted of 83 middle-aged Japanese subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), 37 with prediabetes and 4 with newly identified diabetes, whose homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) averaged 1.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in beta cells induces a signaling network called the unfolded protein response (UPR), which plays a dual role in diabetes. A key regulator of ER-stress and UPR, the orosomucoid 1-like protein 3 (ORMDL3), has been shown to regulate airway remodeling through a major UPR protein, activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6), but the contribution of this regulatory axis to compensatory pancreatic beta cell proliferation in diabetes has not been studied. Here, we detected significantly lower levels of ORMDL3 mRNA in leukocytes of peripheral blood specimens from type 1 diabetes (T1D) children, compared to normal children.
