Objective: In this study, the pharmacokinetics of octa-alpha-butyloxy-zinc phthalocyanine (8-alpha-bo-ZnPc) was studied with regard to Lewis lung carcinoma in mice after intravenous administration of 7.8 mumole/kg body weight at different incubation intervals.

Summary Background Data: The newly synthesized potential photosensitizer 8-alpha-bo-ZnPc is characterized by a high absorption coefficient at the far red wavelength (735 nm) with a good singlet oxygen quantum yield.

Methods: After intravenous administration of 7.8 mumole/kg body weight in mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma, the accumulated photosensitizer was chemically extracted (at incubation intervals of 2, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 168 hours) from selected tissues, and the concentrations were measured by absorption spectroscopy.

Results: The parenchymatous organs, liver, and spleen showed maximum 8-alpha-bo-ZnPc concentrations after 6 hours of incubation. An extensive uptake was detected in lung extracts taken at 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. The malignant tissue did not accumulate high 8-alpha-bo-ZnPc during the entire investigation period. The photosensitizer extracted from muscle, representing normal tumor-surrounding tissue and skin, was even lower.

Conclusions: Because of the extremely low accumulation rate of the tumor, 8-alpha-bo-ZnPc is suggested to be administered topically or in combination with a suitable carrier system in order to increase the photosensitizer concentration in the target tissue, as well as to decrease the loss of dye to other tissues.

Assessing chest radiographic quality and the influence of COVID-19 pathology: the Australian experience.

J Med Radiat Sci

January 2025

Discipline of Medical Imaging Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney, Camperdown, New South Wales, Australia.

Introduction: Quality assurance (QA) in medical imaging ensures consistently high-quality images at acceptable radiation doses. However, the applicability of the chest X-ray (CXR) QA tool in images with pathology, particularly infectious diseases like COVID-19, has not been explored. This study examines the utility of the European Guidelines for image quality in QA of CXRs with varying severity and types of infectious disease.

Background/aim: Kisspeptin has multifaceted roles in both normal and pathological conditions. Although lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer worldwide, the role of kisspeptin in lung cancer remains poorly understood. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of kisspeptin on lung cancer.

Background: Long-term consumption of Western Diet (WD) is a well-established risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, there is a paucity of studies on the long-term effects of WD on the pathophysiology of CVD and sex-specific responses.

Methods: Our study aimed to investigate the sex-specific pathophysiological changes in left ventricular (LV) function using transthoracic echocardiography (ECHO) and LV tissue transcriptomics in WD-fed C57BL/6 J mice for 125 days, starting at the age of 300 through 425 days.

Results: In female mice, consumption of the WD diet showed long-term effects on LV structure and possible development of HFpEF-like phenotype with compensatory cardiac structural changes later in life.

Cancer cachexia is a debilitating syndrome characterized by progressive weight loss, muscle wasting, and systemic inflammation. Despite the prevalence and severe consequences of cancer cachexia, effective treatments for this syndrome remain elusive. Therefore, there is a greater need for well-characterized animal models to identify novel therapeutic targets.

Background: Cryoablation (cryo) is a local anti-tumor method and activation of immunity is one of its mechanisms, but it is affected by many factors. Numerous studies have proved that combination therapy based on cryo can activate immunity more effectively and synergistically. Cryo combined with chemotherapy(chemo) has been proven to improve the quality of life and prolong survival of tumor patients, but the immune effect is still unclear.
