[Relationship between digestive repletion state and hepatic composition in gavaged mule ducks].

Published: July 1998

Two batches of male mule ducks were constituted on the basis of the filling state of the crop at slaughter, after being over-fed twice a day for 5 days: no corn in the crop defined 'OV' birds, and corn in the crop defined 'OP' birds. 'OP' animals presented significantly lower daily consumption during the last 3 days of force-feeding. They had a lighter liver weight than 'OV' ducks (178 versus 197 g), lower hepatic lipid percentages (25.0 versus 33.0%), and enhanced hepatic glycogen rates (4.7 versus 2.4%). Metabolic state of animals might explain these variations in hepatic composition. Unadaptation to force-feeding modifies the metabolic inbalance of the overfed animals and consequently induces higher levels of carbohydrate. These results suggest that similar differences between crude fatty livers could be reflected in the quality of the cooked products.

In health, the liver is a metabolically flexible organ that plays a key role in regulating systemic lipid and glucose concentrations. There is a constant flux of fatty acids (FAs) to the liver from multiple sources, including adipose tissue, dietary, endogenously synthesized from non-lipid precursors, intrahepatic lipid droplets and recycling of triglyceride-rich remnants. Within the liver, FAs are used for triglyceride synthesis, which can be oxidized, stored or secreted in very low-density lipoproteins into the systemic circulation.

Emerging evidence indicates a close relationship between gut microbiota and fatty liver disease. It has been suggested that gut microbiota modulation with probiotics ameliorates fatty liver disease in rodents and humans, yet it remains unclear whether the same results will also be obtained in poultry. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a mixture of probiotics supplemented after hatching can prevent CORT-induced fatty liver disease in broilers, and to determine how such effects, if any, are associated with hepatic de novo lipogenesis and gut microbiota composition.

Exploring the Effects of Imidacloprid on Liver Health and the Microbiome in Rats: A Comprehensive Study.

Microorganisms

December 2024

Biology Department, Al-Jumum University College, Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah 24382, Saudi Arabia.

The current study investigates the systemic effects of imidacloprid, one of the most widely used neonicotinoid insecticides, on the liver and gut microbiome of rats in detail. With consideration of recent discussions on the potential harmfulness of imidacloprid to environmental and human health, the aim was to investigate the influence of this compound in the framework of controlled exposure at different dosages, namely, IMI-5, IMI-10, and IMI-30. Histopathological examination showed that liver morphology changed significantly with the dose, including in terms of cellular disorganization and signs of stress, with an alteration in the hepatic architecture.

Effects of Supplementation on Growth Performance, Hepatic Lipid Metabolism, and mRNA Expression of Lipid Metabolism Genes and Intestinal Flora in Geese.

Animals (Basel)

January 2025

Heilongjiang Provinal Key Laboratory of Exploration and Innovative Utilization of White Goose Germplasm Resources in Cold Region, College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Heilongjiang Bayi Agricultural University, Daqing 163319, China.

The effects of () at a concentration of 1.0 × 10 CFU/mL on growth performance, hepatic lipid metabolism, and mRNA expression related to lipid metabolism, intestinal morphology, and intestinal flora were investigated in geese. A total of 60 male geese, aged 30 days and of similar weight, were randomly assigned to 2 groups.

: The rising use of liver grafts from donation after circulatory death (DCD) has been enabled by advances in normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) and machine perfusion (MP) technologies. We aimed to identify predictive biomarkers in DCD grafts subjected to NRP, followed by randomization to either normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) or dual hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (D-HOPE). : Among 57 DCD donors, 32 liver grafts were transplanted, and recipients were monitored for one week post-transplant.
