Background: Postoperative nocturnal hypoxemia (PONH) is a main factor in the genesis of respiratory, cardiac and neurologic complications after surgery.

Aim: To describe the phenomenon of PONH after elective laparoscopy and laparotomy, and to evaluate the usefulness of oxygen therapy in its prevention.

Patients And Methods: Fifteen elective patients (6 M, 9 F, 51 +/- 8 years old) scheduled for laparotomy (n = 8) or laparoscopy (n = 7) were studied. Ventilatory parameters and pulse oximetry were measured pre and postoperatively. Patients were randomly assigned to receive oxygen by nasal cannula either during the first or the second postoperative night.

Results: PONH (SatO2 < 85) developed in seven patients (47%), of which four had undergone laparoscopic surgery. PONH was more frequent in mildly obese patients and those presenting preoperative hypoxemia (p = 0.03). Peak Flow was lower in patients presenting PONH (p = 0.04). In five patients, PONH was associated with significant tachycardia. Oxygen administration was associated with a higher SatO2 and prevented PONH in 6/7 patients.

Conclusions: PONH is a common event in patients older than 40 years scheduled for open or laparoscopic abdominal surgery, and develops more frequently in those with preoperative nocturnal hypoxemia and greater ventilatory impairment. PONH can be prevented, most of the time, with oxygen administration.

Background: Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) patients experience hypo-perfusion in the short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs), however, the cause of hypo-perfusion is unclear. Real-time dynamic hemodynamic observations may provide clues into specific NAION pathogenic mechanisms. We aim to analyze hemodynamic changes occurring in NAION using multimodality imaging.

Probing Phosphorus Nitride (P≡N) and Other Elusive Species Formed upon Pyrolysis of Dimethyl Phosphoramidate.

Additives and Chemistry, Advanced Fibers, Empa, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science, Lerchenfeldstrasse 5, 9014, St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The thermal behavior of organophosphorus compounds is intricate and poorly understood but crucial for understanding gas-phase flame inhibition, syntheses of thermally active phosphorus-based reactive precursors, catalytic combustion, incineration of toxic nerve gases, and astrochemistry. In this work, the pyrolysis of dimethyl phosphoramidate was investigated using photoion photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy in combination with vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation. This technique enables isomer-selective detection of reactive intermediates, which are crucial in the understanding of the decomposition process.

An effective chemical approach to modulation of biological interactions of cationic polymers was proposed and tested using polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a drug carrier. Branched 25kDa PEI was modified in the reaction with propylene oxide (PO) to produce a series of propoxylated PEIs with NH groups grafted by single or oligomer PO units. Clear relationships between the propoxylation degree and biological effects, such as interaction with plasmid DNA, hemolytic, cytotoxic, and pro-apoptotic activities were revealed for PEIs modified upon PO/NH molar ratio of 0.

Aim: To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness analysis of peripapillary optic nerve head (PONH) and macula as well as ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness in obese children.

Methods: Eighty-five children with obesity and 30 controls were included in the study. The thicknesses of the PONH and macula of each subject's right eye were measured by high-resolution spectral-domain optic coherence tomography (OCT).

Proteins play a variety of functional roles in tissues that underlie tissue health. The measurement of protein function is important to both understand normal and dysfunctional tissue states. Low-flow push-pull perfusion sampling (LFPS) has been used to collect submicroliter volumes of extracellular fluid which are well suited to capillary electrophoresis for compositional quantitative analysis.
