[Enteroclysis in the diagnosis of tumors of the cecum and ascending colon].

Cas Lek Cesk

Radiodiagnostická klinika, Praha.

Published: March 1998

In two patients examination of the small intestine by enteroclysis was indicated on account of haemorrhage into the digestive tract and severe anaemia and in one patient the ultrasonographic picture arousing suspicion of Crohn's disease of the terminal ileum. Although in all instances previously colonoscopy was made, considered complete, in one instance also irrigoscopy, with a negative result, enteroclysis revealed and surgery confirmed extensive carcinomas of the caecum and colon ascendens. The authors discuss the value and problems of the applied diagnostic method.

Background: Magnetic resonance enteroclysis (MRE) has been widely applied to diagnose Crohn's disease (CD). Magnetic resonance (MR) at 3.0 T improves signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), shortens image acquisition time, and shows more advantages.

A distinction is made between exteriorized GBUO and non-exteriorized occult GBUO. The causes in the majority of cases (vascular, inflammatory and tumoral) are located in the small intestine.

Background: Magnetic resonance enterography/enteroclysma (MRE) is an examination technique without ionizing radiation that allows assessment of bowel wall changes and extraluminal pathologies/complications such as in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, among others.

Objectives: To discuss requirements for optimal MR imaging of the small bowel, technical basis of MRE and principles for the development and optimization of a MRE protocol, and clinical indications for this specific imaging technique.

Materials And Methods: Guidelines, basic and review papers will be analyzed.

Aim: To compare the effectiveness and diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography enteroclysis (CTE), double-balloon endoscopy (DBE), and CTE with DBE (CTE/DBE) for detecting submucosal tumors (SMTs) in the small intestine.

Methods: The clinical data of 42 patients with pathologically confirmed small bowel SMTs seen at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University between March 2012 and October 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The value of CTE and DBE for detecting small bowel SMTs was then compared.
