Parkinson's disease symptoms can be improved by transplanting fetal dopamine cells into the putamen of parkinsonian patients. Because the supply of human donor tissue is limited and variable, an alternative and genetically modifiable non-human source of tissue would be valuable. We have generated cloned transgenic bovine embryos, 42% of which developed beyond 40 days. Dopamine cells collected from the ventral mesencephalon of the cloned fetuses 42 to 50 days post-conception survived transplantation into immunosuppressed parkinsonian rats and cells from cloned and wild-type embryos improved motor performance. Somatic cell cloning can efficiently produce transgenic animal tissue for treating parkinsonism.

This study examined the relationship between teat canal score (TCS), somatic cell count (SCC), pathogen infection, and milk antimicrobial components in each quarter of milking cows. A total of 110 quarters of 28 healthy Holstein milking cows were used for the TCS and collection of milk samples. Milk samples were analyzed for SCC, antimicrobial components (S100A7 and lingual antimicrobial peptide (LAP)), and acute phase protein (serum amyloid A (SAA)).

Prior studies examining genomic variants suggest that some proteins contribute to both neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and cancer. While there are several potential etiologies, here, we hypothesize that missense variation in proteins occurs in different clustering patterns, resulting in distinct phenotypic outcomes. This concept was first explored in 1D protein space and expanded using 3D protein structure models.

Importance: VEXAS syndrome (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) is a monogenic disease caused by UBA1 somatic variants in hematopoietic progenitor cells, mostly involving adult men. It is associated with inflammatory-related symptoms, frequently involving the skin and hematological disorders. Recently described myelodysplasia cutis (MDS-cutis) is a cutaneous manifestation of myelodysplasia in which clonal myelodysplastic cells infiltrate the skin.

Tumour cells, which are often found in the peripheral blood of patients with acute leukaemia, may harbour multiple somatic alterations throughout the genome, including changes in the HLA region and short tandem repeat (STR) regions. We investigated whether such somatic alterations interfere with HLA and chimerism diagnostics conducted in preparation for an allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). This study describes 10 patient-based cases for which laboratory diagnostics were performed prior to a possible stem cell transplant in the Maastricht University Medical Center.
