HIV-related mortality has fallen due to scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART), so more women living with HIV (WLH) now live to reach menopause. Menopausal estrogen loss causes bone loss, as do HIV and certain ART regimens. However, quantitative bone data from WLH are few in Africa.

Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the spine and peripheral joints, often leading to kyphosis, joint stiffness, and even ankylosis. Sagittal parameters, such as total thoracic kyphosis (TTK), thoracic kyphosis (TK), major thoracic kyphosis (MTK), and thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK), are crucial indices for evaluating spinal alignment in AS patients and can reflect disease progression. This study aims to explore the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD), sagittal parameters, and joint ankylosis in AS patients.

Costal cartilage plays an important functional role in the rib cage, but its mechanical properties have not been well characterized. The objective of this study is to characterize the properties of human costal cartilage and examine the effects of age, sex, rib level, and degree of calcification. We obtained cadaveric costal cartilage samples of ribs 3-6 with intact perichondrium from 24 donors (12 females and 12 males) evenly distributed by age (range 47-94 yr).

Context: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has deleterious effects on bone mass, microarchitecture, and strength. The skeletal effects of sleeve gastrectomy (SG), now the most commonly performed bariatric surgical procedure, are incompletely understood.
Objective: We examined changes in bone turnover, areal and volumetric bone mineral density (aBMD, vBMD), and appendicular bone microarchitecture and estimated strength after SG.
