Published: March 1998

Setting: Department of Infectious Diseases, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Objective: To study the occurrence of tuberculosis (TB) in a cohort of immigrants from a high incidence country during the years following arrival in a low incidence country.

Design: Follow-up analysis in a cohort of 1983 Vietnamese refugees who arrived in Denmark during the period 1979-1982. The civil registration number could be identified for 1936 (98%) individuals from the original cohort. Date of possible death, emigration and the development of tuberculosis were determined by checking the refugees' civil registration number in the National Civil Register and the National Infectious Disease Registry for Tuberculosis.

Results: Tuberculosis notification for the 1936 individuals fell from 1.14% for the first 12 months to a mean of 0.08% per year during the following 5-year period. During the 16 years of follow up, 36 of the refugees developed tuberculosis, of whom 14 (39%) had had abnormal chest X-ray on arrival and 14 (39%) (including one with normal chest X-ray) had been identified as having active tuberculosis through screening on arrival.

Conclusion: Decline in tuberculosis incidence for immigrants is very rapid if the tuberculosis infection rate is low following arrival. With a very limited TB screening programme (chest X-ray on arrival) and a passive diagnosis policy without preventive chemotherapy, it is possible to control tuberculosis among high prevalence immigrants in a low incidence country.

Background: Using artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret chest X-rays (CXRs) could support accessible triage tests for active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in resource-constrained settings.

Methods: The performance of two cloud-based CXR AI systems - one to detect TB and the other to detect CXR abnormalities - in a population with a high TB and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) burden was evaluated. We recruited 1978 adults who had TB symptoms, were close contacts of known TB patients, or were newly diagnosed with HIV at three clinical sites.

Unusual Cause of Ventricular Arrhythmia.

JACC Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, Hôpital Privé Jacques Cartier, Institut Cardiovasculaire Paris Sud, Massy, France.

Although relatively rare, cardiac metastases represent a significant clinical challenge because of their impact on cardiac function and overall patient prognosis. This case presents a rare and atypical presentation of a patient with ventricular arrhythmia revealing a metastatic cancer in the heart. A 59-year-old man with lung cancer was admitted for chest tightness and episodes of syncope.

Objective: To evaluate the application value of CT diagnostic technology based on the Shukun Imaging Post-Processing System for early screening and diagnosis of lung cancer.

Methods: A total of 35 patients diagnosed with lung cancer postoperatively and 53 patients with benign nodules were included in this retrospective study, all of whom were treated in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University from January 2020 to December 2023. All patients underwent chest spiral CT examinations.

Vasculitides represent a range of disorders marked by inflammation of blood vessels, often posing significant diagnostic challenges due to their diverse clinical presentations and involvement of multiple organ systems. We present the case of a 26-year-old woman who arrived with hemoptysis and a background of exertional dyspnea, chest pain, and occasional visual disturbances. Initial investigations showed elevated perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (P-ANCAs) and myeloperoxidase antibodies (MPOs), indicative of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA).
