Premature infants with hyaline membrane disease and related disorders are frequently hypovolemic. Furthermore, they frequently require repeated phlebotomies for laboratory evaluation of electrolytes, pH, oxygen tension, and other parameters. Adequate care of such infants is aided by small transfusions of heparinized blood. The walking donor program at the Sacramento Medical Center premature nursery furnishes these transfusions without exposing the infants to the hazards of receiving blood from many different donors. The program is described in detail, and the shortcomings of some of the alternative programs are pointed out.

Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) have shown excellent efficacy in clinical research and have prospective applications in the treatment of many diseases. However, the properties of the hAECs and their proliferative mechanisms remain unclear. Here, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is performed on hAECs obtained from amniotic tissues at different gestational ages and passages during in vitro culture.

Background: Kidney failure is a prevalent condition with tendency for familial clustering in up to 27% of the affected individuals. Living kidney donor (LKD) transplantation is the optimal treatment option; however, in Canada, more than 45% of LKDs are biologically related to their recipients which subjects recipients to worse graft survival and donors to higher future risk of kidney failure. Although not fully understood, this observation could be partially explained by genetic predisposition to kidney diseases.

Background: Baseline lung allograft dysfunction (BLAD) after lung transplant is associated with an increased risk of dying, but the association with health-related quality of life (HRQL) and exercise capacity is not known. We hypothesized that BLAD would be associated with reduced HRQL and 6-min walk distance (6MWD) at 1 y post-lung transplant.
Methods: We analyzed patients who underwent lung transplants in our program from 2004 to 2018 who completed 1-y 36-item Short Form (SF-36) questionnaire and 6MWD testing.

Background: Despite decades of post-allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) growth factor utilization, its role remains undefined, leading to ongoing debates and research. The theoretical impacts of growth factors have been challenged in numerous studies.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort study conducted at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, we analyzed the clinical outcomes of 509 patients who underwent allogeneic HCT between May 1, 2019, and May 31, 2022.

Background: Older individuals are at a particular risk of sleep disorders, a loss of cognitive and emotional control, and a poor quality of life. Pharmaceutical therapy for these conditions is commonplace but has not been particularly effective, and relatively little research exists for their treatment using non-pharmacological approaches. The effectiveness of Physical Activity plus selected components of Amygdala and Insula Retraining (PAAIR) was tested to improve sleep quality, depression, working memory, and emotion regulation among older males.
