Spinal injuries in ice hockey.

SportSmart Canada maintains a registry of spinal injuries in hockey and has documented 214 cases of fracture or dislocation of the spine, occurring mainly in North America since 1966. The current annual incidence is approximately 15 cases per year and may be declining as a result of intense prevention programs. Most of the injuries have been to the cervical spine in players 16 to 20 years of age playing supervised games. Checking from behind causing impact of the head against boards has been an important cause of injury, especially for those injuries resulting in neurological deficit.

This descriptive longitudinal study aims to assess the risk factors for severe thoracic and lumbar vertebral compression fractures before and after surgery, contributing to preventive knowledge enhancement in communities and effective treatment management. The study involved 34 patients diagnosed with thoracic and lumbar vertebral compression fractures requiring surgery with bio-cement-augmented pedicle screws between June 2021 and June 2022. Postoperative complications, notably adjacent segment injury, were monitored, and patients received osteoporosis management post-surgery.

The aim of this research was to conduct randomized trials assessing the extent of cement diffusion following robot-assisted percutaneous vertebroplasty (R-PVP) for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF). A total of 96 OVCF patients meeting the inclusion criteria and admitted between January 2023 and November 2023 were included in the study. Among them, 48 patients were assigned to the robotic-assisted PVP group (R-PVP group) and 48 patients were assigned to the traditional PVP group (PVP group).
