1 mg/kg L-thyroxine was administered to rats for 14 days to evaluate the potential of the hyperthyroid state to induce heart hypertrophy and its effect on myosin adenosine-triphosphatase (ATPase) activity. Evidence of hyperthyroidism such as weight loss, elevation of rectal temperature, increased heart rate and oxygen consumption, was observed in all treated rats. Cardiac enlargement was determined by comparison of wet and dry ventricle weights, myocardial RNA, DNA and protein content. Wet and dry ventricle weights and the level of cardiac RNA and protein were augmented by thyroxine treatment. ATPase activity of cardiac myosin was stimulated as the Ca2+ concentration in the incubation medium increased. No difference was found in Ca2+-activation, salt sensitivity or ATPase activity of unreacted and sulphydrylmodified cardiac myosins from euthyroid or hyperthyroid groups. The results showed that in hyperthyroid rats, in contrast to some other species, the biochemical mechanism responsible for the enhancement of cardiac contractility is not an increased myosin ATPase.

Basic helix-loop-helix domains in yeast regulatory proteins Ino2 and Ino4 mediate formation of a heterodimer which binds to and activates expression of phospholipid biosynthetic genes. The human proto-oncoprotein c-Myc (Myc) and its binding partner Max activate genes important for cellular proliferation and contain functional domains structure and position of which strongly resembles Ino2 and Ino4. Since Ino2-Myc and Ino4-Max may be considered as orthologs we performed functional comparisons in yeast.

Rippling Muscle Disease (RMD) is a rare skeletal myopathy characterized by abnormal muscular excitability manifesting with wave-like muscle contractions and percussion-induced muscle mounding. Hereditary RMD is associated with caveolin-3 or cavin-1 mutations. The persistent Na current (I) is thought to play important roles in many brain regions including the generation of inspiration in the ventral respiratory column (VRC) of mammals. The characterization of the slow inactivation of I requires long-lasting voltage steps (>1 s), which will increase intracellular Na and activate the Na/K-ATPase pump current (I). Thus, I may contribute to the previously measured slow inactivation of I and the generation of the inspiratory bursting rhythm.

Protein secretion is an essential cell process in bacteria, required for cell envelope biogenesis, export of virulence factors, and acquisition of nutrients, among other important functions. In the Sec secretion pathway, signal peptide-bearing precursors are recognized by the SecA ATPase and pushed across the membrane through a translocon channel made of the proteins SecY, SecE, and SecG. The Sec pathway has been extensively studied in the model organism , but the Sec pathways of other bacteria such as the human pathogen differ in important ways from this model.
