Efficient seeding of cerebral vascular Aβ-amyloidosis by recombinant AβM1-42 amyloid fibrils.

J Mol Biol

December 2024

Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM), Linköping University, 581 83 Linköping, Sweden. Electronic address:

Aβ-amyloid plaques and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) in the brain are pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia. The spreading of Aβ amyloidosis in the brain appears to be mediated by a seeding mechanism, where preformed fibrils (called seeds) accelerate Aβ fibril formation by bypassing the rate-determining nucleation step. Several studies have demonstrated that Aβ amyloidosis can be induced in transgenic mice, producing human Aβ, by injecting Aβ-rich brain extracts (seeds) derived from transgenic mice and human AD brains.

Signaling pathways mediating the induction of preharvest fruit drop in litchi.

Front Plant Sci

December 2024

State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-Bioresources, College of Horticulture, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China.

Certain litchi varieties, such as "Nuomici", are highly susceptible to preharvest fruit drop, which leads to significant losses in fruit yield and economic value. However, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying this issue are not yet fully understood. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the signaling pathways that facilitate preharvest fruit drop in litchi, using "Nuomici" and "Huaizhi" cultivars as examples, which demonstrate high and low preharvest fruit drop rates, respectively.

Prion diseases, or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), are neurodegenerative disorders caused by the accumulation of misfolded conformers (PrP) of the cellular prion protein (PrP). During the pathogenesis, the PrP seeds disseminate in the central nervous system and convert PrP leading to the formation of insoluble assemblies. As for conventional infectious diseases, variations in the clinical manifestation define a specific prion strain which correspond to different PrP structures.

Background: Diaphorina citri is an insect vector of "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" (CLas), the gram-negative bacterial pathogen associated with citrus greening disease. Control measures rely on pesticides with negative impacts on the environment, natural ecosystems, and human and animal health. In contrast, gene-targeting methods have the potential to specifically target the vector species and/or reduce pathogen transmission.

Tuning the Growth Pattern of Triangular Silver Nanoplates from Lateral to Vertical by Secondary Metal Addition.

Chemphyschem

December 2024

Department of Physical Chemistry and Microreaction Technology, Institute for Chemistry and Biotechnology, TU Ilmenau, Weimarer Straße 32, 98693, Ilmenau, Germany.

We are presenting an easy synthetic access to the aqueous synthesis of truncated trigonal silver nanobipyramids with tunable width and height in a facile two step synthesis. We modified a synthesis that employs seed particles with twinning faults on which silver is deposited laterally along the twinning fault, leading to flat particles. The ratio of lateral and vertical growth is adjusted by the co-titration of further noble metal salts at nanomolar concentrations alongside the silver precursor.
