The assessment of a new bellows spirometer against a water spirograph showed: slight alinearity, minimal overestimation of FVC (1.7%) and underestimation of FEV 1-0 (2.9%) as well as of the ratio FEV 1-0/FVC (4.8%). The main advantages of the instrument are: lightness, easy operation, ruggedness and low cost; it seems mainly indicated for use in large scale field surveys.

Determinants and progression of stigma in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease.

Amyotroph Lateral Scler Frontotemporal Degener

January 2025

Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK.

: Stigma in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neurone disease (ALS/MND) may be felt or enacted; felt stigma covers feeling devalued by the illness, whereas enacted stigma refers to being treated differently because of it. Stigma in ALS/MND has been shown to increase social withdrawal, worsen quality of life, and reduce use of assistive devices, so we explored prevalence and factors influencing stigma. : Participants in the Trajectories of Outcome in Neurological Conditions-ALS study completed scales measuring stigma, fatigue, spasticity, functioning, mood, worry, self-esteem, and perceived health, as well as demographic information and symptoms like head drop or emotional lability.

Purpose: To objectively assess the accuracy of socket measurements taken during cruciate ligament reconstruction using a retrograde reaming technique.

Methods: Six complete knee sawbone specimens were used to ream anterior and posterior cruciate ligament sockets in the femur and tibia in a retrograde fashion using a standard retrograde reaming device. The longest and shortest sides of the sockets were measured using a ruler.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to support neonates and children with cardiopulmonary failure was first described in the 1970s, since which time its use has expanded to an increasingly complex and heterogenous pediatric population. Despite preserved survival outcomes, complications of ECMO use, including iatrogenic vascular injury, are common. Here, we provide a brief overview of the epidemiology of pediatric ECMO and associated vascular complications; describe common peripheral cannulation equipment and techniques, trends in cannulation and decannulation strategies, and respective incidence of vascular complications; and review existing evidence for best practices in cannula site selection, cannulation technique, decannulation strategies, and management of vascular complications, with the goal of providing a comprehensive review for interventionalists involved in the care of pediatric ECMO patients.

Tumor-associated mesenchymal stromal cells modulate macrophage phagocytosis in stromal-rich colorectal cancer via PD-1 signaling.

Discipline of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Galway, Galway, Ireland.

CMS4 colorectal cancer (CRC), based on the consensus molecular subtype (CMS), stratifies patients with the poorest disease-free survival rates. It is characterized by a strong mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) signature, wound healing-like inflammation and therapy resistance. We utilized 2D and 3D , and models to assess the impact of inflammation and stromal cells on immunosuppression in CMS4 CRC.
